I was slumped against the cold stone wall in the desolate room that had been my home for so many years.

The air was thick with dust. Sometimes, if there was any light, you could see particles floating in the air like depressing fireflies.

The smell was musty and suffocating, but you got used to it eventually.

My hands and feet were used to being in shackles. The skin around them had been rubbed raw and healed so many times it was basically indestructible.

I looked up through the blanket of hair across my eyes. It was matted and dry and dirty.

I knew I couldn't stay there much longer, or I could be driven even more insane than I already was. Once the string snapped, that was it.

I knew I had to escape. I just didn't realise I'd have any help.
