Chapter Two

"Alessa! We're heading out!" Esme called up to me as I came downstairs. Everyone was heading out the door, deciding to go for a late night walk. I decided to stay behind, mainly for my own curiosity. And of course, to avoid any questions should something... happen.

"Okay, be safe guys," I waved. Rosalie snorted once, stalking away in frustration. She did not like me, complaining about how I shouldn't be there. I didn't quite understand why but I had a feeling that it wouldn't matter to begin with. Besides, I wanted to think about things for a moment.

"If you need anything, just call. We'll come back immediately," Carlisle reassured me. I just chuckled at his dad attitude, rolling my eyes at him.

"Yeah, I know. Just go for your evening walk. Don't worry about me," I waved them away, sighing deeply as they walked out into the woods surrounding the place. Once they all disappeared into the tree lines, I closed the door before feeling my shoulders slump uncomfortably.

This was all so weird. Not one of them ate a single thing and I don't think any of them even drank anything. They even all had the same eye color. And the fact that they were all so cold to the touch. At times, I was wondering if I was actually touching a corpse instead of a person. Which made me think they were something that I hadn't contemplated in a long time. Though I wasn't particularly sure. And there was the fact that I felt something odd coming from four of them.

Jasper, I felt calm around but it felt like my calmness wasn't of my own doing. It dawned on me then that I felt it coming from him. Which did not help things at all. Alice, she was so sure of things that I couldn't help but wonder if she could honestly see things before they happened. Bella, she was odd. Protective even, which was normal I guess. I always knew she was weird like me but her body just felt like something was surrounding her. Something that had been a part of her for many years. And then Edward. Whatever he was or did, I wanted to scratch my brain. Like literally, reach into my skull and scratch. I didn't like it at all.

Oh well, there was not much I could do about it. I belonged here now, though I didn't feel welcomed. Rosalie was the most difficult of the bunch, the woman glaring at me every time she even sensed my presence. I wasn't sure how to take that, but the others reassured me that it was just how Rose was.

Alice was the most welcoming, almost uncomfortably. She immediately told me about a shopping trip we would go on soon and I couldn't help but stare at her like she lost her mind. I wasn't a shopper and I didn't really want to go shopping. But considering the amount of clothes I had, which wasn't much, I guess I had to suck it up and go.

Silence seemed to stretch on as I sat in a chair, contemplating everything that was going on. It was odd really, completely odd, but I did feel at home in this house. It was so nice and wonderful, better than the crappy apartments we lived in. My mother would often use sexual favors as a way to pay for rent, so the run down ones were easier to do. And they weren't always "uninhabited" by other creatures.

A noise made me jump, my head turning toward a window. I wasn't sure if it should be a concern enough to call Carlisle and when silence greeted me again, I decided to just let it go. But the moment I looked away, another noise caught my attention. It was more like a scratching noise than anything and I couldn't help but walk toward a window to see if I could see anything.

A low growl made me jump, stopping in my pursuit toward the window followed by a quick flash of something from around the window. I felt my heart jump, as my mind quickly processed something that was very important and very horrible for me. Whatever this thing was, it wasn't human. And I knew about human things. More so than the others, which is how I preferred it. But this thing wasn't human because for it to zoom past my window, it had to zoom past on the second floor.
