These brilliant and enormous celestial objects were bridges between the neighboring Worlds of the Multiverse.
Like stars, galaxies, or nebula; these Portals were naturally occurring phenomena. Much larger than most other objects in space, they could only be found in the vast regions of deep space, in-between galactic clusters.
For many generations, they were revered as the most beautiful objects in the night sky by the young civilizations developing in the Multiverse. They were a mystery that very few people actually understood. For centuries, Scientists from the various Worlds of the Multiverse dismissed the Portals as being simply beautiful, but meaningless, visual phenomena with no practical application or purpose.
Even as they became spacefaring civilizations, most assumed that these Portals were just large, beautiful, useless lights in the vast regions of empty space where no galaxies existed. Few Scientists ever bothered enduring the long travel times required to get up-close to these majestic illuminated structures to investigate them in detail. It was seen as a wast of precious fuel to attempt to traverse such vast and otherwise empty tracts of Deep Space.
Little did they know how wrong they actually were.

It wasn't until a nefarious villain, who's name is not known, somehow managed to take control of a small number of Portals and close them off from the rest of the Multiverse, that the inhabitants of the Multiverse realized that the Portals were more than just pretty objects to look at through a telescope. Fear struck all space-traveling civilizations. What had this villain discovered? What would this villain do with the Portals he had taken control of? No one knew...
"The Powers That Be" ordered the establishment of "The Multiverse Guild" to investigate the situation. The Guild's mission- to oversee the protection of the Portals, and discover their mysterious powers. For nearly a century, the Guild successfully maintained the Portals and prevented many other attempts by vile and power hungry individuals to hijack them. The Guild conducted important research and cataloged the secrets of The Portals.
The Guild made a decision to kept these discoveries secret. Fearing that the wonders they had discovered would attract evil men, with greed for power in their hearts, who would once again attempt to take control over the Portals, the Guild itself went "underground" and stopped sharing its wisdome with the people of the Multiverse.
