Vic's POV
"Vic! VIC!" At first I thought it was just another fan shouting at me, but when I laid eyes on Evelyn running out of the shop toward me I knew something was wrong. Her breathing was uneven and her expression was of pure panic. I felt my insides twist in worry of what news was to come.
"What is it? Wheres -" She grabbed my hand roughly and cut me off, dragging me into the shop as fast as she could. I nearly tripped over my own two feet as she weaved through the shelves and tables with ease.
I opened my mouth to ask her where the hell she was taking me, but lost my train of thought when I saw Cara standing near the corner, panic-stricken and shaking with her phone clutched in her hand. "Oh no... no no no." I whispered under my breath, wrenching my arm from Evelyn's grasp and hurrying over to my girlfriend. "Cara? Cara!" I grabbed her wrists and gently shook her, trying to snap her out of whatever trance she was in.
What had happened between her and her mother that could have been so bad?
"Cara baby listen to me." I tried to make my voice sound as soothing as possible but I was almost sure it came out shaky. I couldn't lose her again, I couldn't be away from her again. She wasn't leaving me this time.
I threw my arms around her in a haste, pulling her close to me and murmuring whatever came to my mind into her ear. I love you, you're beautiful, you're safe with me.
I felt her arms tighten around me and a wave of relief washed through my body; she was responding again. She was going to be okay. I felt her body shake with hidden sobs and I held her closer, knowing it was best not to ask what had happened until we were alone at least.
I don't know how long I held her for, and I didn't care. I just needed my girl to be okay again. I held her until her body ceased to shake and her breathing returned to normal, but even then I was reluctant to let her go. She was safe in my arms. I could keep her protected here.
She pulled out of my tight hold, swiping at the tear tracks on her cheeks and sniffling a little. I watched her with sad eyes as she took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. I hated seeing her cry; it meant I had failed in keeping her safe. I had failed to keep her happy. I was the one that told her to take that call after all...
"I- I'm sorry," She stuttered, taking another deep breath and looking under control again. I admired how even when she was completely broken, she always tried to convince us she was okay.
"No sorries. No apologies. You have nothing to apologize for." I gently grabbed her chin between my thumb and finger and lifted her head so I could see her eyes. The icy blue eyes I fell head over heels for were now brimmed with tears.
It broke my heart to see her like this, but I couldn't help but lean in and gently press my lips to hers. I felt her body relax a little when my lips met hers and she kissed me back gently. I sighed into the kiss and pulled away, taking her hands in mine and glancing around for a back exit. Spotting one, I began to pull her toward it knowing that Evelyn had must've run off to inform the guys of what happened.
"No." she said in a weak voice pulling me to a stop. "Go say goodbye to everyone. I can get to the van myself." I was thrilled that she was taking an interest in the fans, but I would not let her put them before herself.
I pulled her closer to me and gazed directly into her eyes. "I love that you're thinking of the fans, but the last time I left you alone like this you ended up in the hospital for a week. I'm not risking it again." She opened her mouth as if to protest but then thought better of it. I couldn't help but smile at the fact that she knew she couldn't win against me.
