Chapter 4.

Arriving late to work, Ruby silently prayed her boss was out back fishing through papers instead of waiting out front to scold her sorry ass. It was a tough chance, but she couldn't help but hope.

Entering the cafe, she saw that luck had been entirely on her side, as Frank, the second employee, smiled before heading towards the locker room to make his escape. Work was pretty horrific. Even poor ol'Frank couldn't handle their stuck-up boss.

"Rubes, he's even crankier today. Doubted that was possible, but hey- anything' possible ay?" Frank then winked at her, and got the hell out of there.

She felt the reality of being alone in the boring cafe finally sink in, as soon as Frank's back faced her and the door slammed behind him. Frank was pretty decent. Sometimes a flirt, but he was a college guy after all, nonetheless, very kind.

She felt it was entirely reasonable to have college friends. Their third coworker was Jamie who had the night shift after 7. But they barely spoke, as Ruby was always anxious to leave.

Throughout her train of never ending thought, Ruby found herself gawking at a figure entering the cafe. Chin up, smile straight, and remember to be welcoming. She thought to herself. It couldn't be that hard could it?

Looking up at Mr. Johnson, she couldn't help but let her smile falter just a bit. The man was sinfully handsome, and she couldn't help but lust after his god forsaking figure.

Perfection, yet fate had it all wrong. She was destined for sweet nothing.
