After work on Wednesday I decided I would head down to the coffee shop in need of a break. Staring at the boring walls in my office is something I can only do for so long. As I set up my laptop I thought I would wait on ordering because I wasn't in the mood for it yet.
After sitting at a table for about 20 minutes a girl came up to me and asked "Do you mind if I sit with you? I won't be a bother but this place is pretty packed."
I scanned the room and noticed that she was right, it was packed and I hadn't noticed till now. "I guess that's fine. Im Carmen by the way." I introduced myself. She began setting up her stuff. "Yea I think I've seen you here before. I'm Kayla nice to meet you." She smiled as she made herself comfortable across from me.
We entered into a comfortable silence for the next hour or so. Eventually I decided to get up and place an order. When I made it to the counter I saw Alex wiping down some machine. I patiently waited for her to notice me.
She eventually made her way to the counter. "Never seen you here on a Wednesday? How are you?" She asked.
"I'm good. I got bored at work so I thought this would be a little more interesting."
"Oh really. Where do you work?" She asked as she started making my usual.
"I work at the publishing house around the corner. I just started as one of their editors about a month ago."
She glanced over her shoulder to look at me. "Small world. I tried to get them to publish a book for me about a year ago." She said. I was stunned. "Really you write?" I asked.
"I used to. I gave that dream up a while ago." She said as she walked back with my drink. After I payed her I gave her a quick smile. "I would love to hear more about your book." I said.
"Maybe one day i'll bring it in for you." She said with a smile that never reached her eyes. I had a feeling she really didn't want me to read it but I would love if she allowed me to. "Thank you." I smiled and walked back to my table.
I still had a huge smile on my face when I reached my table. "Woah what happened to you?" Kayla asked clearly noticing how flustered I must look. I thought for a minute before I answered.
"I know we hardly know each other but I have no friends here so i'm just going to vent if you don't mind. Do you know the girl who works here. Her name is Alex?"
She nodded her head in response so I kept going.
"Okay well I have been seeing her here every week since I moved here and to be honest she is the main reason I come here. I don't even know whats happening really I have never felt this way before. She just has some crazy affect on me. When I see her and talk to her I get all those feelings that high school girls talk about and I don't even know why because I don't even really like girls like that. There is just something about her" I rambled on practically using a single breath.
"Wow that was a lot. I'm pretty sure she is into girls why don't you ask her out?" She suggested
"Are you crazy I can't ask her out. She's really intimidating I don't know I guess I want her to ask me out. What if she said no I would be so embarrassed. Besides like I said I've never really been into girls so I have no clue what i'm doing."
She let out a sigh. "Does she seem interested in you?" She asked.
"I don't know I mean she gave me a free drink the other day..."
I sighed in frustration. I have never felt like this before and it will drive me crazy. The thing is I don't really know what I want from her. I don't know if I want her to ask me out but I do know that I won't say no if she does.
Kayla starts to pack her stuff up and get ready to leave. "Well I'm sure everything will start to work itself out so don't stress out. Will I see you again?" She asked.
"Yea i'll be here again Saturday, feel free to come join me if you see me." I suggested
"Will do. Have a good night Carmen." And with that she was gone, and I was left with my thought's. I looked up from my laptop over to the counter. I could see Alex making a drink with the espresso machine. She was focused but you could tell she was relaxed, as if making these drinks had become second nature. After she gave the drink away she looked up and made eye contact with me. I could see her grin that snapped me out of my gaze as I quickly looked away. Oh God she caught me starring. That's so embarrassing. Before I knew it she was walking over to me and sitting in front of me. When did this happen?!
"Do you mind if I join you?" She asked making herself comfortable in the seat across from me. "Not at all but don't you have to work?" I shifted nervously.
"I'm on break."
"Oh well thats cool" I responded. We fell into a silence before she finally broke it.
"You know... This is the second time i've caught you checking me out. That's quite a bad habit you have there." She eyed me with a sly grin on her face. She knew exactly what kind of affect she was having on me at this moment. All I wished is that I could have the same affect on her which seemed impossible. She was so confidant and relaxed. I highly doubt there is anything I could say to throw her off her game which she seems to have mastered.
"Well I guess if you caught me looking at you that must mean you were looking at me too." I retorted. I mentally face palmed as I realized how ridiculous I sound when I attempt to flirt.
"And if I was?" She asked raising her eye brows and looking into my eyes. I was shocked for a moment but instinct took over and began responding. "Then I would ask why I guess..."
"And I would say because I think you are cute." And then she stood up. I could feel my face redden at the sudden realization of her words. I couldn't even respond. "I have to get back to work. Try not to stare when I leave." She winked and began walking away. My stomach was in knots and my palms were sweating and the only thing I could think about was the fact that she just called me cute and practically dropped the mic as she walked away.
I was starting to think that maybe I was in over my head. Clearly this girl is a smooth talker and I don't think i'm ready for it.
