When It Couldn't Get Worse

"So do you want to tell me why I had to take my car instead of my bike?" She asked.

And so it began.

"Well let's just say those machines haven't been to kind to my loved ones." I spoke looking out the window.

"Well i'm sorry for that. I lost my best friend last year." She said understanding. She said she lost her friend so... Nonchalantly. Like it hadn't even phased her.  The car fell in silence before I decided to open up.

"It was my brother. He's a few years older then me. Hit by a drunk driver." I started to feel the sadness all over again in my heart. It still feels unreal to me.

I could see her hand tighten on the wheel. "He was racing. I was supposed to be with him but I couldn't get out of work because we were super busy. He lost control of his bike and slid into a moving car. The rest is history." Her hands were now white knuckled on the steering wheel but still in her face she appeared unphased. As we stopped at a red light she let out a breath I hadn't realized she was holding. Giving me her full attention she looked over at me. "I understand why you might not want to ride one. I myself can't imagine not riding but racing wont be happening any time soon. And im sorry about you brother."

Before I had a chance to respond she pulled into a parking spot at a restaurant along the river. I was still looking around when she came around and opened the door and grabbed my hand to help me out. "No mans ever done all that for me." I smiled.

"Really? What a shame. I guess only a lady knows how to treat a lady." She teased leading the way into the restaurant. It seamed like a barbecue styled restaurant. The typical all american hang out with football over the bar and a patio over looking the river. "What is this place?" I asked looking around at all the different random things on the wall.

"This is my favorite place to hang out. Turns into somewhat of a club at night but nothing too wild. And the food is amazing." She smiled genuinely and I took a second to take in her looks. She was a very natural kind of beautiful. No make up or anything just a pretty face and alluring eyes.  "Whatchu lookin at?" She teased.

I blushed and looked away. "So is the coffee shop your only job?" I asked curious to know how she could afford that car. She chuckled before the waitress interrupted to take our drink orders. "I'll have a rum and coke." I said hoping the liquid courage would make me less awkward. "Just a water for me." Alex ordered smiling politely.

"Making me drink alone?"  I teased. "Its the safest way to keep in secrets. Can't tell you my whole life story on the first date." She smiled. Suddenly I became more curious about her.

"Why not?" I asked

"Because then I wont get a second." She gave me a cheeky grin. Our drinks came back to the table and we ordered our food.

"I own the coffee shop as well as a couple other places on Mainstreet. The coffee shop is however the only one I actually work at. The others I just monitor from far." She responded looking off into the water.

I guess that explains it. I'd love to see where she lives.  "Wow. Must be cool being so successful at such a young age."

"I guess. Not how I pictured my life to turn out but I won't complain." She said. I wanted to ask her more but our food arrived at the table.
