I walk a lonely road

and hold your hand as I go

down desolate lanes

and I remember all the pain

you look me in the eye

"baby please, just let it die

It's all over now

lift your head

wipe the sweat from your brow"

over and over we go

over everything we used to know

I bargain my spine

"it's never too late, you can have mine"

I don't want to be alone

don't want to walk this road on my own

I take it all in

this was the town where it all did begin

and I look around

everything's burned to the ground

and when I glance again,

I know that wounds will never mend

broken  building and ash

my feet walk above broken glass

and then I realize, and I stare

that your hand is no longer there

you've walked into the smoke

It's too late now, you fall and choke

whatever you thought that you would be

you were always a hero of war

to me

So this poem is a little mix of a lot of things. It has lyrics and song names from some of my favorite songs, and the whole thing is based on a dream I once had.
