A smile to remember

Smiling sweetly she laid in front of me.

I smiled back, but she couldn't see me.

She had her eyes shut, not tightly but very lightly and it was as though they would flutter open soon.

I remembered the first time I had met her.

She had smiled at me. The same sweet smile.

It's funny how smiles can tell so much.

That first smile showed me she had no worries.

She was a care free girl.

I felt a smile start to play on my lips.

A care free girl she was.

A beautiful care free girl.

I remembered when we started to grow closer.

The special smiles she would give me.

The cheeky one.

The sweet one.

And the one with the small chuckle.

I shook my head.

The cheeky smile.

That smile made her so much more beautiful and loveable.

I remembered her warm smiles later on when she would catch a 'mild cold.'

That smile seemed to tell me that I didn't have to worry about her.

She would nearly fool me.

But I had known her for too long.

I closed my eyes and felt them get wet.

Were they tears of joy or sadness?

I can't tell the difference nowadays.

When her condition worsened, her smile got sadder.

She would stab me in the heart everytime she smiled.

But in every one of her smiles, there still remained that tiny bit of cheekiness.

I chuckled at the thought of it even though the tears were now streaming down my face.

Then finally, I remembered the last smile she gave to me.

There was no other emotion but happiness.

It meant goodbye.

It told me to let her go.

And I did.

I placed the rose in her hands and gave her one last kiss on the forehead.

"Goodbye," I whispered.

I wiped the tears away from my face and sighed happily.

I walked out of the building feeling content.

She was no longer in pain now.

She was free from that.

I didn't have to blame myself anymore.

I was just as free as she was.

Her last words were, "Honey, when I'm gone, find another smile for me. Then I will rest lightly. So I will not be a burden to your heart."

So I obeyed, and I found another smile to love.

But she always be in my heart.

And her smile will always be the special smile no one can replace.
