Imagine Person A is the defendant of Person B because Person B murdered Person C and Person A has to defend Person B to escape the death penalty. After the first day of the case Person A says "hey, don't sweat it. I will make you escape the penalty." Person B waves them off and says "Thanks for helping me but I don't deserve it."
After a few days of court Person A falls in love with Person B.
Final days of the trial Person B gets the penalty and Person A cries in their room because the love of their life is going to die soon.
After the death of Person B. Person A goes to their grave and put flowers on their gravestone and says, "I didn't escape your penalty."
