Not Good Enough

Letting herself into Joe's apartment with the key he had given her, Y/N frowned at the sound of laughter that floated over to greet her.

"Great," She mumbled to herself. "She's here."

Tossing the keys onto the counter, Y/N shrugged out of her jacket, glancing over her shoulder as footsteps announced the entrance of someone.

"Oh, hey Y/N!" Joe's girlfriend, Sophia, smiled over at her. "How are you?"

Y/N followed Sophia as she crossed the kitchen, opening the fridge. She wasn't wearing anything special, just black leggings and a lose t-shirt, but still she looked flawless. Beautiful. Perfect.

"I'm good, thanks." Y/N answered, dragging her eyes away from the other woman. "Joe in the living room?"

"Yup." Sophia answered, smiling again. Forcing a smile in return, Y/N turned quickly and walked to the living room, a genuine smile growing as she saw her best friend lounging on the couch.

"Who let you in?" Joe teased, wrapping an arm around her as she sat beside him on the couch.

"You gave me a key. And invited me over." You poked his side, giggling as he tried to shuffle away.

"Now why would I do that?" He chuckled.

"Hmm, not sure." Y/N shrugged in response, but they both started laughing a moment later.

"What's so funny, you two?" Sophia asked, practically gliding back into the living room. Y/N shuffled over on the couch, away from Joe, pulling lightly at her own shirt, wishing she had chosen something different for today.

"Oh nothing," Joe smirked over at Y/N, before focusing back on his girlfriend.

"Just being two weirdos."

Y/N flinched lightly at that, being called a weirdo was not an attractive feature. Sophia's laugh echoed across the room, and Y/N hated how lovely it sounded. Her own only moments ago suddenly sounding horrific compared.
She knew she shouldn't feel this way, she knew she was attractive, but it was hard when Sophia was around. She was just so beautiful, and Joe always talked about it. Y/N had been fine at first when he had started to date Sophia, but as time went on, she began to compare herself, noticing how much better Sophia was, and how clearly Joe preferred those parts of Sophia. Y/N didn't want to hate her best friends girlfriend, but she did, because it showed her that she would never be good enough for Joe.

"Hey, I'm going to go do some work for a bit." Y/N stood from the couch, grabbing the bag she had previously dropped on the floor.

"Ah, I see how it is." Joe looked up at her, a teasing smile on his face. "Just using me for my computer."

"I thought you knew that already." Y/N teased back, waving at Sophia as she left the room quickly, unable to remain in the same room any longer.

Yet it seemed Y/N couldn't escape her, because when she brought Joe's computer to life, staring back at her was a photo of him and Sophia, looking perfect on the red carpet.

Y/N felt her breath catch as the tears pooled in her eyes, blurring the image in front of her. Before she could stop it, a small sob escaped past her lips, and she covered her mouth quickly, silencing any more as the tears fell down her cheeks.

She could still hear the perfect couple talking and laughing in the next room over, and it broke her heart.

Because that would never be her.

Y/N knew she would never be the one that Joe looked at the way he did at Sophia. Y/N knew she would never be good enough for him, no matter how she dressed, how she did her make up or hair. Y/N knew that Joe would never be hers, and it killed her.

Half an hour later, Joe walked into the room where Y/N was working, leaning over her shoulder to watch her work.

"Sophia gone?" Y/N asked softly, her mind and body tired from her small break down before.

"Yup. Just leaves us two for our epic best friend movie night!" Joe turned his head to smile at her, but it only lasted a few moments as he studied her.

"Hey," He pulled the chair back from the desk, turning it to face him. "Everything okay?"

Y/N felt nervous as Joe's blue eyes studied hers. She knew her eyes were probably still red, and for one brief moment, she debated telling him everything. But she couldn't, because he was happy with Sophia.

"Just tired." Y/N said instead, offering him a weak smile. "Sorry in advance if I fall asleep on you tonight."

He remained silent for another moment longer, and she worried that he had somehow figured out the truth, what she was hiding, but he simply shook his head, that smile reappearing on his face.

"You usually do anyways. Come on." Joe grabbed her hand, pulling her up from the chair. "Work can wait. Let's eat too much food and watch a horrible movie." He laughed, leading her from the room.

Y/N let out a sigh of relief, glad she had managed to keep everything hidden for one more night, and when Joe looked over his shoulder at her, that contagious grin directed at her, she smiled back.

She may not be good enough for him as a girlfriend, but at least she had him as a best friend.
