December 29th

June and Jessie met in the corner seat at Starbucks. It had become a ritual to them; they didn’t even have to remind one another.

Of course, Jessie came earlier today. After yesterday’s little screw up, he had made sure to set an alarm and get money from his uncle the night before.

The older man didn’t care much about where Jessie decided to go during the day so long as he wasn’t being disturbed. Jessie had never really liked his mom’s brother but he was much better than his dad’s sister who had about nine kids and twins on the way.

His aunt’s house was a mad house and he swore to never return no matter what.

He quickly snapped out of his reverie and tried not to think about it.

When June finally walked into Starbucks, Jessie couldn’t help but smile at how her hair was blown about as a sudden gust of wind followed her into the shop. She walked with her eyes blank and indifferent until she spotted Jessie’s face and let a dainty, little grin come to her lips.

She sat down across from him and briefly spied the Gingerbread Latte in front of him which he didn’t appear to have drank.

She looked up and met his attentive eyes. “Hey.”

“Hey,” Jessie responded.

After yesterday’s topic of conversation, the two had grown that much closer to one another.

Especially considering Jessie rarely ever spoke of his Great Aunt. She was his secret that he never talked about with anyone, even his ex girlfriend that broke up with him for a Varsity Chess player.

And now June knew.

And he knew about June’s secret.

Even though he loved his Great Aunt – maybe even more than he loved his own parents – he knew that losing her couldn’t compare to losing both his mom and dad. He didn’t know what happened to her parents, they hadn’t talked about them at all the previous day.

He wasn’t going to ask. If she was ready to talk then he would be too. Otherwise he didn’t feel that he could pressure her into discussing a topic as delicate as death itself.

“What is your favourite colour?” Jessie asked.

June found his question to be completely random but after yesterday’s admission about having “random days”, June had learned that Jessie was just that... random. “I’d have to say black and white,” she replied.

“Those are shades.”

“I know.”

Jessie narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “I need a colour.”

“I know.”

Jessie sighed. “Will you give me one?”

June shook her head. “Not until you tell me why you need it?”

“What about if I told you that it’s just for a personality survey I’m doing?”

“Then I would tell you that my favourite colour is green.”

“Like your eyes,” Jessie observed.

June shook her head and recoiled in her seat. “My eyes are not green. They’re brown.”

Jessie smiled and shrugged. “If you say so.”

“I know so.”

Jessie nodded and then paused momentarily before his next words. “Can I hold your hand?”

June felt her cheeks heat up but she didn’t even know why. He was asking to hold her hand, not for her hand in marriage. And yet she still felt nervous as she held her hand out for him to take. His palm felt warm on hers but they quickly hid their hands under the table... like it was a secret.

It felt like a secret; a good secret. This was different; it wasn’t like when June had tried to comfort him earlier. This time she felt the spark. That warm burst that started from her toes and ended right at the tip of her fingers where their hands were interlocked.

But even though it was the greatest sensation, June couldn’t help but fantasize about what his lips would feel like on hers...
