The Ocean

I came here all the time when I was younger. The smell of salt water mixed with the crashing sound of waves brought a calm over me that I have never known. I know when I leave California, I need to stay near the water. The crashing sound of waves is something I need, it's what keeps my head sound on days my own voice drowns out my thoughts. She never left me, my dearest ocean, I am always the one to leave her. I cannot leave you anymore, my love, the sounds of your waters haunt me even when I am hundreds of miles away.

Sometimes I swear I can hear her speaking to me. "Don't go," she coos from the echoes of her crashing waves. I want nothing more than to tell her how much I love her, how much she means to me, but the words never have a chance to escape my lips. How do I tell her that she is the only one I would stay in one place for? But even through all of my silence, I can feel in my heart that she already knows. Since the day that we first met, she has had every piece of my heart. She has seen me on the verge of death, she has seen me in quiet moments of solitude, and she has seen me when life has given me the greatest joys. I am so lost without her.

She told me once that I would find you, but that you would arrive when I needed you the most. Her words changed to "go," and since then, I have been determined to find you.
