Just as his mom had said, [Last Name] was back to her normal self the next day.
"Hanamiya-kun, how has your mom been?" she asked during lunch.
"Fine," he replied.
She had learned about his mom's cancer when she had dinner with them, and asked every day how she was since then. He didn't know if it was more annoying or comforting.
"That's good," she said, "Are you not gonna eat again, Hanamiya-kun?"
"Not hungry."
She pouted. "You need to take good care of your body if you want to keep playing basketball."
Hanamiya rolled his eyes. "You sound like my mom."
"Because your mom is right."
"You're being extra annoying today," he noted, sighing.
"Hanamiya-kun, being worried about your health is not annoying," [Last Name] protested with a whine.
"I'd beg to differ."
She sighed dramatically, throwing her hands up in the air. "Hanamiya Makoto is a lost cause, isn't he? What a shame."
He scowled. "What the hell are you talking about, [Last Name]?"
"Didn't you hear me?" she asked, irritating him even further, "You're a lost cause."
Hanamiya glared at her. "How to hell do your parents even deal with you?"
[Last Name] froze, and he took notice of this.
"I didn't mean it like that--"
"No," she interrupted, standing up, "It's fine."
Hanamiya watched her retreating form. He felt like shit.
