Rainforests

I did an information booklet on how to save rainforest, in geography, there were pictures but obviously I can't put them on wattpad, anyhow I think I got second highest mark in the class. So read, enjoy and SAVE THE RAINFORESTS!

Where are rainforests located?

There are many rainforests all over the world. Here is a list of them:

·         Brazil

·         Liberia

·         Cote D’Ivoire

·         French Guinea

·         Suriname

·         Indonesia

·         Democratic republic of Congo

·         Thailand

The largest rainforests are:

·         Amazon river basin rainforest

·         Congo river basin rainforest

Smaller rainforests are located in central in Central America, Madagascar, Australia, and India

Temperate rainforests are located in:

·         Pacific Coast of USA and Canada

·         New Zealand

·         Tasmania

·         Chile

Temperate rainforests cover less than tropical rainforests.

7% of the earth’s surface is tropical rainforest.

Fact: There are only two seasons in tropical rainforest. The wet season and the dry season.

Why are the rainforests in danger?

Rainforests are in danger because:

It is being used for cattle ranching which is also known as ‘slash and burn’ farming- 50% of rainforest destruction is caused by this.

  Logging- 2nd largest cause of deforestation. Vast areas of the forest are cut down in one go.

·         Forest fires.

   Highways built through the forest.

   Mining- poisonous chemicals used to separate waste from the materials.

·         Climate changes.

·         Agriculture-trees cut down to make way for vast plantations.

    Pollution-the chemicals used for mining finds its way into rivers, polluting water supplies. 

     Dams-can become blocked with soil washed down from deforested highlands in heavy rain causing flooding. 

    What are the effects of people’s actions?

   Our actions do have effects on the rainforest; such as:

·         Native People

  When trees are cut down, it reduces the space for indigenous people. Indigenous people have used the accessible resources by hunting, fishing, gathering and farming. This way of live has died out with contact from incomers.

·         Soil Fertility

  Removing the vegetation cover exposes the soil to erosion and leaching, not have branches and leaves to break its fall, heavy rain quickly washes the soil even on a slope. Though the soil isn’t completely removed, the nutrients might be leached out. Soils then lose their fertility and this causes problems for farmers.
