sea

You are a sea
Beautiful and deep and incomprehensible
And I am afraid
So instead of letting you
Wash over me,
Engulf me,
And turn the ink upon the pages of my heart
To tiny rivers
Spilling from me like demon's blood
I turn and I run
And with your sea at my heels
Dirtied with the dirt of the soles of my shoes
I laminate my heart
So that you cannot enter
Now my plasticky pages gather cobwebs
And the book-smell is gone
Your ocean is gone
It hides with another heart,
Another story
Just across the horizon
Sometimes I wonder if those words
That meant so little but
Which I thought meant so much
Were worth forsaking
Your deep blue sea
