I slowly stopped sharpening my sword as I paid more attention to the Sky girl on the other side of our campsite. She was pulling on her boots as she readied herself for the activities we had planned for the day.
The Sky People had made a temporary alliance with us grounders, and I had no problem with that. The sooner we got our people back from the wretched Mountain Men, the better. What I did have a problem with was this Octavia Blake girl trying to become apart of our clan without having actual reason to do so.
Watching her finish tying her lace seemed to infuriate me, and I had no idea why. Her whole presence bothered me, and I knew I was being unfair because I knew she was a strong, powerful girl who was capable of looking after herself and her people. It was admirable. But she annoyed me.
Her electric blue eyes flickered up from her boots and met my eyes. I narrowed my gaze at her, making it known that I wasn't happy with her presence, but this only made her smirk in return. I rolled my eyes before directing my attention back to my task at hand: sharpening my sword.
About a minute into doing so however, I felt a presence near me, and when I looked up, I regretted it instantly.
"What do you want, Sky girl?" I mumbled unenthusiastically.
She made a noise that was in between a laugh and a snicker, before saying, "I have a name you know."
I refrained from rolling my eyes again. "Octavia Blake. I'm aware."
"Then you'll know that I'm aware of your feelings towards me."
I immediately looked up to meet her smirking expression. "What feelings?"
She pursed her lips to prevent herself from laughing. "You don't like me, Y/N. I'm not stupid."
I swallowed hard, deciding not to answer, then looked back down to my sword, continuing to sharpen it.
"I don't get what your problem is," she continued, not caring for my disinterest. "We're supposed to be allies. Nobody else seems to have an issue with me but you. And I just want to know why, then I'll leave you alone."
I sighed and ignored her, hoping she would get the hint, but from my peripheral vision, I could see her standing there with her arms crossed and her stare fixated on me as she awaited an answer. I groaned lowly, knowing she wasn't going to let me be.
Meeting her curious gaze once more, I stopped my actions and answered her question. "You are very right, Octavia. I don't like you. And that is because you don't know us. You don't know my clan. You don't know what it's like to be a grounder. What it takes to be a grounder. Whether you like it or not, you're from up there." I pointed to the sky, before pointing a finger at her. "You will never be a grounder."
Once I was done, I found myself glaring harshly at the younger girl before me. Thankfully, I hadn't lost too much control to catch anyone's attention, only hers. And I knew that my words had had some effect on her when I saw the hesitation in her demeanour. Her eyes clouded with uncertainty, and I knew I had won.
Before I could say anything further, probably along the lines of "go away", she cocked her head to the left and curled her lips into a mischievous smile, completely confusing me. Stepping forward, just enough to lessen the proximity between us to make me feel uncomfortable, she leaned her head closer to my face. I made sure I didn't appear weak nor vulnerable before her, despite feeling it immensely for some unknown reason.
"I guess I'll have to prove you wrong then, Y/N, won't I?" she asked with a challenging tone in her voice.
Her face this close to mine and her eyes looking as beautiful as they did had a great effect on me, and as much as I tried my best to hide it, she obviously noticed. A teasing smirk on her lips, she stepped back from my flustered self before winking at me playfully and walking away.
I released a shaky breath when she was gone and forced myself to look away from her retreating figure. Instead, I wondered one thing.
How was she going to prove me wrong?
