This is what I've learnt:
Twenty years ago, in response to the earth's rapidly increasing population, the governments of the world decided to start on a solution. They brought together the world's most brilliant scientists and gave them their task.
Ten years later, after trials in various small towns and cities around the globe, it was completed. The government compiled a list of target zones – a hit-list – and began slowly wiping out one city at a time.
By this time, stories had reached the public. They had taken the perplexing, the impossible, and given it a name: the Black Wave.
The Black Wave is not a darkness. It is not an electromagnetic pulse or the creation of alien invaders here to destroy the world. It does not cause short-circuits or eat away at power generators. None of the theories are correct.
It's the one thing no one ever suspected it to be: a highly-powerful hallucinogenic toxin, slowly released into the air by the people we trusted the most.
The doubters were right. The Black Wave isn't real at all.
It's all in our heads.
