Brian banged through the front door of the Foster's house, prompting a cop on the porch and one just inside to go for their guns. When recognition dawned, they both looked as if they had seen a ghost.
"Your dead," said one of them under their breath.
"Not yet." Said Brian. "But you will be if you blow the story. Where is Evan Foster?"
The second guard frowned. "He and his aunt went upstairs an hour ago. Been watching the news."
Brian started to the stairs. "Which way?"
"Up and right. There is a big sitting room up__"
Brian took the stairs two at a time, paused outside of double doors, and heard the television reporter talk on the details of Brian's death. Shit, it was probably national news by now. He better make sure someone called his mother, his sister. Evan Mitch.
He took a deep breath, then burst through the doors to the sitting room. Evan Foster stood behind Carol's chair. In two seconds , Brian had his shoulders shoved up against the walls. "Where is she, you bastard?"
Evan stammered. "You're d-dead. They said y-you died."
Brian tightened his grip, the fingers on his right hand crumpling something that felt like cardboard in Evan's pocket. "Where is she?"
"I don't know what you are talking abo___"
Brian slammed him against the wall. "Tell me, you son of a bitch!"
Carol Foster grabbed his arm. "Mr. Fuller, you have no right coming in here and__"
Brian shoved Evan into the wall again, saw his eyes roll back with pain. "Sarra is missing, and you know where she is."
"N-no no I don't know where she went."
"Sarra is missing?" Carol said at the same time. She had Justice by the collar. The damn dog was wagging his tail. "What is going on?"
"Sarra pretended to be sleeping, then left through the passage ways from the carriage house." Brian explained. "Your nephew here called off the guards an hour ago, to say he would be going out. Said he would take the Green Taurus and didn't want to be followed, wanted some private time with a lady friend after such a bad day, right? Five minutes later the Taurus pulls out and no one follows it because they know its Evan, but look at this, Evan is right here and Sarra is gone. You wanna explain that?"
The question was punctured by another small smash against the wall, something falling from Evan's pocket. Carol's please not to hurt him fell on deaf ears. Evan's face scrunched with pain.
"I don't know where she went.' he said weakly.
"You gotta do better than th__"
"I swear I don't know! He was screaming now, and Brian snarled at the tears that squeezed from the corner of his Evan's eyes. "She just said she had to go. She begged me to trust her and said she could find Abby. She said you were dead and the Feds weren't letting her help, that there was another doll and she could figure it out. She begged me, said she would save Abby...."
"So you let her go after a madman by herself?"
Evan pinned Brian with a glare. "She can't live like this you stupid asshole! Just what do you think Sarr'a life will be worth if Abby dies and she could of stopped it.___"
"She can't stop it!"
"She thinks she can!" Evan shot back. His voice dropped three notches, emotion filtering through. "She just wanted me to give her a little time to figure out where Brandon took Abby. You guys wouldn't even let her try. You wouldn't let her try. I gave her a gun. She said if I loved her at all___"
And that was all there was before Evan Foster broke down, crying like a love sick bastard that he was, weeping for the wrong choice, the wrong emotions, the wrong woman.
"What gun did you give her?"
"A Rugger 9 mm."
Brian breathed again, Sarra would know how to use that one at least. He let Evan's shirt spring free of his fist and rolled his shoulders. Glared at both of them. "Keep your mouths shut."
"Fuller." Evan bent to pick up a card from the floor, and pulled two more from his pocket. He held them out to Brian. Baseball tickets. "When you do find Sarra and Abby....."
Brian gave Evan a long look, then pocketed the tickets. He started for the door but turned back to Evan. "Sarra's favorite color is red by the way," Brian said. "And her biggest fear? Is what she is out there doing right now."
