Sarra sat on a blanket, wrapped in another with her right shoulder bandaged. Her clothes, ripped and splattered with blood and dirt and Brandon James's brain matter, had been taken away, and the paramedic now squatted at her feet. "You couldn't have wore shoes for this little outing miss?" He asked shooting her a concern smile.
"The FBI had custody of my shoes," She answered, looking at Brian
He cursed. "Stubborn damned woman. You might have called me."
"You were dead."
Brian flushed. He felt so helpless, he couldn't sit down, couldn't stand still, couldn't stop staring at her or touching her or even scolding her.
Beside the deer stand, two deputies hefted a body bag at each end. Brian watched Sarra as she squinted into the morning sun, her gaze following Brandon's body to the stretcher. She touched the fresh bandage on her temple. The cut would be tended properly this time and would heal with hardly any scarring. Brian would see to it.
He would see to a whole lot of things. Baseball games and hot wheels tracks for Abby, Christmases with plenty of assembly required toy. Peaceful, slumber filled night. Unrestrained sex.
Lots of that. And a ring that wasn't part of a act, one she didn't don as part of a costume to present to the world. A ring his sister Kay would call a BAD ass ring with a big ass demand.
Brian turned when he heard a motor, a white scooter with the sheriffs logo threading between the trees. He glanced at Sarra, making sure she was patched up enough not to look scary, then waved the scooter over. Behind the driver, Abby pulled off her helmet.
She ran to Sarra, and twenty five agents, swat team snipers and sheriff deputies all stood still and watched. When Abby finally pulled back Brian joined them.
"Mommy is crying," Abby said and Brian smiled.
"Look around.' he said and pointed to the collection of bold champions surrounding them. "So is everybody else." He squatted. " You think I could get in on this?" he asked and made it a three way hug.
A family.
"Hey Fuller." It was the crime scene Techie, holding up a plastic bag. "You want to see this?"
Brian got up, leaving Abby to examine Sarra's bandages. He took the bag containing the tiny battered skull and turned it this way and that, studying it.
Dean came over. "Something wrong?" He asked.
Brian handed him the skull. "I can't help wondering," he said, If this isn't Christie__"
"Then what happened to her?" Dean finished. "We will find her. She is probably buried out there not to far from this one."
"Yeah.' Brian said , looking across the way at Abby. Having her missing for the breif hours she was gone had just about ripped a hole in his chest.
Dean followed the direction of his gaze. "Looks to me there might be some changes in your life, Fuller." He said.
"Absolutely sir."
"Are you up for one more?" Brian's brows went up. and a strange surge of excitement pulsed through his veins. "I would like to have you on board, legitimately. That is, if you think you can learn to follow orders now and then."
Brian smiled. "Now and then maybe."
"Good." Dean said shaking Brian's hand. 'Now maybe Stard will get off my back."
"Don't count on it." Brian paused. "Look I need a little time first. I would like to go see my brother in London. And I think I will take a long nice honeymoon."
Dean clapped him on the shoulder. "Another one bites the dust."
Brian went over to Sarra and Abby and crouched down beside them.
"what was that about?" Sarra asked. "It looked serious."
"Dean invited me to come back to the bureau."
"Oh, Brian that is wonderful."
"But I told him I needed a few weeks first, that I have something to do."
"What is that?, Sarra asked holding Abby's hand.
Brian reached to Abby's hair, where a barrette had come loose. He moved it up and fastened it, then stroked Sarra's cheek. "Figure it out."
Epilogue next.. I am going to miss writing this.. Hope yall enjoyed.
