A galaxy is a massive group of stars, star clusters, interstellar gas and dust, and dark matter which is all gravitationally bound together. There are approximately 100 billion galaxies, but the number should increase to about 200 billion as telescope technology in space improves.A few million years after the big bang theory the universe was mainly just dark matter, later on the gas and dark matter started to clump together and that is how the first galaxies formed.
