Dan was twenty one.
He sat in a boring beige room, a clean sheet of paper crinkling under him as he adjusted himself on the doctor's checkup table.
"And how did you say you obtained these injuries Dan?" she asked as he poked at his arm again.
"Tripped down the stairs," he lied, wincing as the woman prodded a certain part of his tender limb. She pursed her lips and nodded skeptically, but didn't say anything or question him further.
Once she was done, she went to type a few things on her computer before coming back and explaining that he had broken his arm and would need to go to the hospital for a cast. Dan was overcome by fear at this statement. He couldn't not go; it could permanently damage his arm. But no one at the hospital would believe his lies, and he really didn't want to get caught up in a whole bunch of drama over why he was so hurt.
The doctor continued to stare at him as he made his decision, and eventually he sighed I'm defeat and told her, "fine, I'll go."
