Dan was sixty one.

His hand moved back and forth slowly against the soft black coat of the medium sized dog sitting beside him. To the other side of him sat Phil, doing pretty much the same thing to his hair as he was to the dog. The three were completely relaxed, watching some random show on the TV in front of them, though not really paying attention to what it was.

Suddenly, the dog got up and trotted towards the kitchen. "Looks like Melody wants some dinner," Phil laughed, watching as their pet turned the corner into the next room before peeking her head back out and watching them.

"I guess so," Dan chuckled, pushing himself up with one arm. He grunted as his knees popped when he stood, but quickly recovered and hobbled off into the kitchen after the dog.

After pouring a bit of food into a bowl on the floor and giving her some fresh water, Dan made his way back to the living room and was just about to sit down again when the phone started ringing. Grumbling slightly, he walked beck over and picked up up.

"Hello?" he said.

"Hey. It's PJ. Is this Dan?" came the voice from the other end.

"Peej! Yeah, it's Dan. How are things?"

"Not so great, actually. I just called to tell you that... Chris passed away yesterday a-and I was wondering if you'd be able to... to make the funeral," PJ informed him, his voice breaking with stifled sobs.

"Oh PJ, I'm so sorry."

"Y-yeah, thanks."

"When's the funeral?"

"We haven't totally decided yet, but it probably won't be for a while. Just... try and make sure your schedule is clear for the next little bit so you can make it. Please?"

"I'll make sure we do. Did you want to tell Phil?"

"Yeah. Yes please. I'll talk to you later Dan."

"See you PJ."

Dan placed the phone down on the counter before going out to Phil and telling him to go talk. He sat back down in front of the TV and continued mindlessly watching whatever was on it, trying to stop himself from thinking about the death of his best friend's husband.
