Dan was sixty two.
He smiled a bit as he finished tying the crisp black tie around Phil's neck and spun him around to look at him. Aside from his eyes, red from crying already, he looked absolutely amazing. Not that he normally didn't, but seeing the man in a suit was rare, and Dan loved every moment he got to see it happen. Although in this instance, it probably would have been better if it was just a normal day and they were both in normal clothes, because the only reason Phil was dressed up was for Chris's funeral.
It had taken a while to get the event organized, but today was finally the day they would celebrate what his life had been and put his body to rest. They hadn't even gotten there yet, and Phil's eyes were already like a broken faucet. Of course Dan was still sad, but he had never really been good friends with Chris, so he wasn't quite as heartbroken over his death.
After getting his shoes on and trying his best to collect himself, Phil was soon ready to leave. It didn't take them long to reach the church where the service was being held, and once they did, Phil almost seemed to not want to go in. It took a few nudges and a bit of persuasion on Dan's part before he warily made his way through the entrance and walked slowly towards the sanctuary. The room was filled with black-adorned people, almost all of whom held tissues against their faces as they tried to hide their tears. The funeral started soon after they had found their seats, with a person who Dan didn't really recognize going to the front and thanking everyone for being there to remember Chris on the final day before his body would be buried.
The service didn't last very long, but every second of extreme sadness made up for the lack of time they were there. Before he knew it, he and Phil were walking back out of the relatively large church and into the inappropriately sun-filled outdoors.
Just before walking back to their car, on the other end of the parking lot, Dan turned back and whispered, even though he knew it wouldn't be heard, "goodbye Chris." The only time in his life he had heard a real goodbye.
