"The Road Not Taken"
"I believe that social science is the heart of the world," I
once answered during our discussion in Disciplines and
Ideas in Social Sciences (a specialized subject for the
HUMSS) when our teacher asked for the significance of
social science.
Yes, Social Science may not be the brain of the world
but it is the heart of the world. It may not be the center
of the world but it is the world's hand- a hand willing to
help, a hand willing to reach out, a heart willing to love.
Let me tell you a story about my anxieties and
indecisions before I enrolled in HUMSS. I was anxious to
enroll here before because all of my friends enrolled in
STEM and I was afraid I won't survive it but I chose
HUMSS still. In fact, during the first week of classes,
there was a day when they let us shift strands and it was
the most critical moment of my life. It was hard, seeing
my friends looking comfortable because they had
someone beside them as they faced the next journey in
their lives. While I, was alone.
But as I write these things, I can't help but be proud that
I had the courage to stand by my decision then. It was
the greatest decision I've made in my entire life, because
that decision was based entirely on my own, it was MY
decision. It wasn't my friends' or parents' decision but
MINE alone.
A number of people has questioned me, "why HUMSS?"
And at the beginning of the school year, I've been asking
myself the same question. But when Creative Writing,
Disciplines and Ideas in Social Sciences and Philippines
Politics and Governance had been introduced to us, I
stopped asking myself that question because finally, I
found an answer to it. My answer? Because this is
where I belong. This is my fate.
If you are a person who wants to seek justice, to write,
to entertain, serve, to inspire, to take care of your fellow
men, or you just want to understand humanity better,
HUMSS is more than willing to accept you in its warm
doors.
We don't read and write poetry because it's cute," said
Keating. "We read and write poetry because we are
members of the human race. And the human race is
filled with passion. And medicine, law, business,
engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to
sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are
what we stay alive for."
Let me end this with these lines of Frost from The Road
Not Taken,
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
