The meeting with Cook, to explain the connection between the murder and the attempted arson, ended up being held at the PD headquarters at One Schroeder Plaza, with the whole brass attending it, including the Commissioner. They all listened to Gillian's exposition and asked their thousand questions. Finally, the Commissioner said that the SCU's line of action was the correct one, and his words silenced King Gillian's political rivals.

Gillian was careful to avoid suggesting that it could be a much larger situation, maybe taking place at that same moment in other cities. And she kept everybody so focused on how grave the cases were, that nobody had the slightest chance to slip any comment about her night meeting with a fed at the crime scene.

The list of people involved in covering up Roger Johnson's deeds, the thwarted attempts to set fire to a school hosting an event for several hundred people, and most of all, the notion of a person, or a small group, anonymously instigating kids to do this kind of thing—it was all just too serious to give room for internal quarrels.

The Commissioner stated that he would meet with the Mayor to discuss the situation and encouraged Gillian to stay on their investigation. That was the coup d'grace to those expecting things to go south for King Gillian's daughter.

When the meeting was over, Gillian saw the Commissioner shaking hands with Cook and her father, congratulating them on the work the SCU was doing. She narrowed her eyes at them as she, Aldana and Tanya picked up their things to leave. Well, that should do to keep Cook off her neck for a while. And maybe now her father would find a gap to talk to her.

King Gillian found it faster than she expected. He didn't leave the conference room with the Commissioner, but lingered near the door and turned to her. She approached him on her way out and met his eyes, waiting for him to make the first move. To her surprise, he flashed a proud smile at her.

"Well done, Reg," he said, so low that only she heard it. "How about dinner tomorrow? It's been a while."

Gillian felt her lips curl up and her head nod, as a warm wave of happy relief washed over her. Damned man, she could never be angry at him. She even regretted that her hands were full of papers, because she would've very much hugged him. King Gillian nodded back at her, still smiling, and gave her way to walk out.

She left the conference room feeling the world was a brighter place. Her father had always stood up for her so much, and had taught her so much, and given her so much, that seeing him proud of her was better than any professional or personal recognition she might ever receive.
