 Asgore really doesn't want to fight you. He destroys the mercy option, not because you can pled mercy, but because he knows he knows he shouldn't get mercy for what he's doing. 

And when he makes attacks with his trident, those colored stars aren't his eye's, but tears. Lastly, did you notice that his attacks all follow a pattern, none of them are like a direct hit on you? It's because he can't bring it to himself to do something like that.Asgore really is an underrated character, wish the fans could see that, same with Toriel.
