After Hunter’s bus was parked it was time for Scotty to get to his and get on the road. Hunter and I followed him to his bus to say our goodbyes. Hunter’s done this a million times and plus we were going to be seeing him in a few days anyways, but it felt like it was going to be forever. Hunter said his goodbye and good luck and walked inside to find Jerry, leaving me and Scotty standing by ourselves. I think I was falling for Scotty more than I was for Hunter; it’s those damn blue eyes.
I was completely determined not to cry because I just don’t cry.
Scotty: “Hey don’t you dare cry, or I might, and that’s not a good thing.”
Me: “I’ll try not to.” I said quietly because I was afraid of the faucets turning on because my eyes were burning. He pulled me into a hug and even put a hand on my lower back to pull my waist up against him. We just stood there like, unspeaking for a bit.
Scotty: “It’s only two days and we’ll have a whole week before I’ll have to leave for the next show. Besides you’ll be practicing and time will fly, I promise.”
Right then I honestly thought he was gunna kiss me or something but I don’t think I was ready for it. I looked up into his eyes while his arms were still around me and he leaned down and kissed my forehead. “Bye Sara,” is all he said before he untangled his arms from me and walked onto his bus without turning around. I know it’s only two days but I’m falling for him and it just seems like it’s going to be forever.
After that I walked inside and found Hunter and Jerry in the booth talking about a sheet of music they were looking at.
Jerry: “There she is! Wanna see your set list so you can start practicing?”
Me: “Yeah that would probably be a good idea.”
Hunter: “I can help you go through them if you want.”
Me: “Sounds good to me.” Jerry left the room and Hunter and I sat down and got started right away. I was supposed to memorize three songs in two days and be ready to perform in front of a couple thousand people, when I’ve only sung to my mirror in my bedroom. I told this to Hunter and he had a great idea. I practiced the first song and he had a surprise for me, he asked me to cover my eyes as he led me somewhere.
I walked in front of him while he led me around. When he said it was okay to open my eyes I was on a small stage and everyone from inside the recording studio was the audience. Hunter got up and explained why they were there.
Hunter: “Hi everyone we both appreciate you showing up, this here is Sara Drew. Sara was recently discovered by my manager Jerry, and he wants her to come on tour with me. The only problem is that she’s never sung to a crowd and our first stop is Milwaukee.” The crowd nodded in agreement and then Hunter continued; “So here’s Sara singing the first song she’s going to be singing, keep in mind she just got the music today, so yeah here she is!”
I stood behind the microphone and the band started playing the music. My first song is called “The only one.” It’s actually a pretty funny song about a break up and it’s the girl in the relationship, or me, dissing her ex saying he wasn’t anything special.
I got done with the song and there was an instant applause even some people stood up. Okay that really wasn’t that bad, but it’s definitely gunna be harder to do on tour. I thanked them for their time and everyone filed out of the room to go back to what they were working on. Hunter and I walked back to his recording booth and he said to me;
Hunter: “See that wasn’t that bad was it?”
Me: “It really wasn’t, I’ve just got a lot of work to do.” With that I sat back down and started memorizing and next two songs. I was working really hard and it got to around 11 at night and Hunter went off to his bus to go to sleep. I kept working throughout the night. I checked the clock and saw 3am and decided to call it quits for today.
I walked out to the bus and tried to be quiet as I closed the door and walked to my bunk. I used the light from my phone and saw a note posted on the top bunk and they left a step stool so it was easier for me to get up. The note read ‘Sara, this one is now yours, welcome to the bus,’ and all of the band members and of course Hunter signed it. I crawled up and went to sleep, tomorrow’s gunna busy again.
Last night I slept pretty well, mostly because I was so tired. When I woke up everyone was already out of the bus because all of the bunk curtains were now open. I wasn’t really hungry so I just went right into the studio and picked up my lyrics sheets. No one came in to find me almost all day it was about 1 in the afternoon when Jerry came in and found me.
Jerry: “You’re working pretty hard, aren’t you getting hungry sweetheart?”
Me: “Come to think of it yeah just a little.”
Jerry: “Just a little? Come on we’re all going out for dinner, join us?”
Me: “Yeah I’ll be right out.” I put on my coat and put my lyrics in a folder in my bag and walked outside to find the van ready to go.
Over dinner we all discussed how we were packing up and what time we had to leave in the morning. They came to the conclusion that it was best to pack up tonight and then the bus can leave bright and early to be there for the end of Scotty’s show.
Jerry: “Sara, I talked to Scotty’s manager and if we make in time for his last song of ‘Please Remember Me’ he said their harmony singer came down with a sore throat and need a replacement for that show. Are you interested?”
I sat there thinking about it for a minute. When Jerry said I wouldn’t have to sing up next to Scotty, I could just stand with the rest of his backup singers.
Me: “It would be good practice and help with my nerves; I’d want to be with the backup girls if that’s okay.”
Jerry: “Okay I’ll give Scotty’s manager, Travis, a call right after dinner.”
I thanked him and then our food was delivered and I ate in silence listening to their silly sports conversation something about March Madness. Great they’re into basketball too. Jerry paid for dinner because he claimed that he invited us and guests shouldn’t have to pay. We all piled back into the van and started packing the trucks and bus with sound equipment, instruments, and stage stuff. For now I don’t have a band just me and my guitar. Jerry said if I do great at the show I’ll get my own band and another song to play. He said it was just an ‘everyone starts somewhere’ kind of thing, which I understood.
Hunter had a surprise for me and yet again I had to cover my eyes. They had one of the big screens on and hooked up.
Hunter: “Okay I asked a friend to make this for you so your set isn’t plain.” He pressed a button and a big yellow bubble letter display of my name showed up on the screen. “Then this will show on the two side screens.” And an SD in the same font came onto the screen. “Do you like it?”
Me: “Yeah that’s so nice of you, thank you!!” I gave him a hug and we both continued to help pack up.
We were on the road soon after and I went to sleep because I was planning on getting up really early to keep practicing my lyrics.
