Silvery flakes gradually fall down from the night sky to the ground leaving a sheet of white where trucks drive into the distance. I sit in the living room of my house with my mom and my daddy. This would be my last time with my papa for a long time. My mama explained to me that daddy was asked to serve his country in the second world war. I begged him not to go, but he said he had to. I cried for what seemed like forever. Now we wait for the truck to come and take him away. I stare out the window, up towards the sky outside where the snow came to a slow stop. I think about what will happen to my daddy at war; I wonder if he'll die, if he'll make war friends; if he'll return home when the war is over; maybe he will be a prisoner of war like the people my teacher spoke of from the first world war.

A harsh knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts.
