Psalm 112

This psalm is so full of wonderful precious promises! Those who read psalms often have favorites. Interestingly, although many of the verses in this psalm are widely used among Christians, few believers declare Psalm 112 as a favorite. Perhaps it doesn’t have that special “something” that makes people develop a love for it.

The promises in psalm 112 are promises the believer can rest his heart on.  They are specifically for those who fear the Lord and who delight in his commandments. Delighting in God’s commandments can be a challenge for any believer. God has commanded us, for instance, to pray for the sick, to forgive our enemies, to preach about the good news of God’s kingdom, to give to the poor, to be righteous and full of compassion among many other commandments.

Some of these commandments are easy to obey, some not. God blesses us because it is His nature to bless and is love is not conditional, but some blessings are conditional on us obeying God’s commandments nevertheless.

If we obey God’s commandments, the psalm promises we will not be afraid of evil tidings. Evil tidings come every day. The world is full of rumors, untruths, fear-mongering, so-called expert punditry. But if we know Scripture, listen to God, and truly fix our hearts on following His commandments, we will see how God shows his love and favor to those who love Christ. The wicked will see that there is a difference between those who are under the Passover blood and those who aren’t.

1Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

2His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

3Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.

4Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

5A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

6Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.

7He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.

8His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.

9He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.

10The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.
