The first thing would suggest to any new Radical Pacifists: take a good first aid course. It will be useful in many situations.

For a general first aid situation, here are a few tips:

General Accident

- Make sure there is no threat to you. If whatever hurt them hurts you as well, you won't be doing much helping.

- Check to see if they are conscious. If they are, ask them if they are in pain. Do not let them lose consciousness. Call an ambulance.

- Unconscious people should be checked for breathing. Lean down so your head is over their face. Look down along their torso. If you can feel their breath or see the chest rising and falling, leave them how you found them. Call an ambulance.

- If the person is not breathing, check the airway (nose and mouth) to ensure there are no obstructions. Ensure the tongue has not fallen across the throat. If they do not start breathing, start chest compressions and get someone to call an ambulance.

- Chest compressions: Place hands, palm down and fingers interlocked, over centre of chest. Press downwards once every two seconds to one-third the depth of the chest. Continue until person starts breathing or help arrives.

Car accident (car hits pedestrian)

I have first hand experience (as the conscious and not concussed victim), so here are a few pointers:

- Ignore the driver. They will likely be hysterical but okay. Call an ambulance immediately.

- If the victim is conscious, check for concussion. Indicators of concussion as follows:
+ Pupils dilated by different amounts
+ Difficulty focusing on very near or very far objects
+ Irrational behaviour
+ Pupils do not react to light

- Do not let any concussed person sleep. Ever. Get them checked out by a medical official.

- Ensure the victim is in a safe place. If possible, stop traffic. Do not move victim unless there is no other option.

- Victim unconscious, proceed as in initial situation.

Hiking or similar

- Broken arm, ensure the victim is in a safe place. Bind in a sling (many wonderful YouTube tutorials). Get to civilization and call for help.

- Large cut, apply pressure with cloth to stop bleeding. Bandage. Do not remove cloth. Always raise a bleeding limb above the heart. Get to civilization.

- Hyperthermia (or Heatstroke), get victim to shade. Give victim water and food. Do not allow to get too cold. Do not artificially cool quickly.

- Hypothermia (Frostnip or Frostbite), warm up SLOWLY. Share body heat. Do not give food until stably warm (will draw blood away from skin)

- Falling into cold water, warm up QUICKLY. Remove wet clothing. Get out of wind.

These notes are by no means comprehensive. Do a first aid tutorial. Carry a first aid kit. Who knows, you could save someone's life.
