Sounds.

That's all there were. Just sounds. Scraping, footsteps and a few other sounds I couldn't recognize. I tried to open my eyes but they felt like they had been glued shut.

I was in the dark and that's where it didn't seem to hurt as much.

I was aware of breathing not too far from me and I sucked in a breath, reminding myself it was something I needed to do too. My cheek was pressed up against the wall or the ground and at that moment I couldn't tell which way I was facing or if I was facing anyway at all.

Maybe I was dead. Maybe this was all just snatches of memories before it all ended. Before I ceased to exist on the earth anymore. I thought of Adelaide and her smile and her eyes and her willingness to finally trust me. My mind flashed back to the night I watched her on the beach, just like I had remembered a million times since then. I watched her sink to her knees in the sand like a movie I knew by heart. I watched her lean over in pain, physical or emotional I still didn't know. But I could feel the pain. I winced. I was alive because the pain was real and it was spreading from the base of my skull and toward every direction, down to my fingertips.

My eyelids fluttered like butterfly wings slowly drying from a previous thunderstorm. Everything was hazy and I blinked about a dozen times before I could see things again. I took in my surroundings, trying to ignore the dull throbbing in the back of my head. I was in the same room before everything went black. The lightbulb still flickered overhead, even that much light made my eyes burn. I flicked my gaze around the room and stopped when I saw Ryder. He was slumped against the wall, his feet straight out in front of him, tied by the ankles. He sat with his head bowed, his hands behind him. A few feet away lay Katy, curled up on her side. The gag was back in her mouth and her eyes were shut. Either she was passed out, sleeping, or dead.

All three weren't good.

My hands were zip tied together but my feet weren't. I guess they were counting on me being out for a long time. I pushed some air through my lips, stirring dust that had settled on the ground. I wondered exactly how I got here, when just months ago I was nothing but a normal person doing normal things and I was here in a psychotic, power hungry mans prison.

The door creaked open and I went still. Heavy boots clunked across the concrete floor and past my head, the rush of air sliding over my face. I watched out of half closed eyes as he walked over to Ryder, poking the end of his gun into his leg.

"Still giving us the silent treatment I see." he growled. The voice wasn't familiar, but it held a presence that was frightening and commanding all at once. The voice was probably Bane's.

He turned his head slighty to look at Katy who hadn't moved since the last time I looked over. His hair was cut short, the shadow of a beard lining his face. He had a scar running from the base of his ear to the end of his left eye. He gripped a gun tightly in his hand, keeping it close to his leg and I swallowed, panic starting to build inside of me despite my efforts to keep it down. I watched him crouch down in front of Ryder and he stuck the gun under his chin, tilting his face up. His lip was split, his eye swollen from getting beat up.

"You thought you could hide forever." Bane said darkly. "But you see, I told you that double crossing me wouldn't get you very far."

"I didn't double cross you." Ryder spat back and I tensed. I could hear the raw anger layered in his voice.

Bane chuckled, moving the gun and standing back up. "You see, but you did." he replied. "By falling in love with her."

He pointed the gun in Katy's direction. Her body was limp and my fear for her increased with every passing second.
