the drop of well

you broke the lampshade when you slung rumpelstiltskin through the door

(i, always in awe of that repulsive gift) it landed in three pieces way down there

one piece of wood there and     another piece of wood there     another there

that grotesque statuette     (other-she always said she could tie it to her

bicycle and its evil eyes turning blood would light her way in red to me at night)

everyone hated it which made me always defend it     the thing had a

little club in its hand that could be removed (why) and its stumpy

legs on which it could never stand rested on a square of uneven wood

(how could someone who loved me give me that, i always fascinated-

maybe it really was voodooed) it was rumpelstiltskin-ugly in a mystifying

way (do you remember)      while i marveled at y-o-u-r wildness (vagabond)

which made you shoot arrows into your own furniture     deep in the bush

still     you had no right to break my frightful gift even if you used up one

of your nine lives on me (besides you adored animals who adored you)

but my rumpelstiltskin-heart made you pay     you climbed up and down

outside of balconies to retrieve dresses on hangers (you probably got

a charge out of that) but     you never got your wallet or your brand new

bracelet back from beyond there     and from beyond there     and there

i think rumpelstiltskin took them     served you right even as i love you now
