Chapter 5

Hermione gasped. “Malfoy!” Even he was a bit stunned with himself. Why had he just done that? Because he thought that he was going to lose her?

His eyes were wide as he watched Hermione slowly place her hands over her mouth.

“I….,” he started, not sure of what to do. Her hands fell and she got closer to him, closing the space.

“I’m sorry,” Hermione whimpered. “I’ve just been so conflicted and I….” She didn’t know what else to say. Draco looked into her eyes and they were swimming with emotion. Hermione remained silent and so did he.

“You shouldn’t be the one apologizing,” Draco finally said. “I should be the one. It isn’t right for me to make you choose so quickly and I’d regret it for the remainder of my life if I lost you.” Hermione looked into his eyes. This wasn’t like all the other times he had apologized. This time, he was truly sincere. Her lips pursed and she backed away from him.

“I still think that we need time apart Draco,” she said. “But please don’t give up hope.” She gave a little smirk and left the Room of Requirement. Draco watched her, dazed a bit. He couldn’t help but be in love with her.

That night, Hermione couldn’t help but stay up and ponder her decision. Her thoughts wandered off into oblivion and then drifted right back to Draco. He was the blond-haired boy that she could not keep off of her mind, and when he laughed or smiled it made her love him even more so.

            Wait, love?

Hermione, don’t be foolish, she told herself. He was just using her. Was he? She didn’t really know. He was a Veela after all. They can’t help who they loved, if he even loved her at all.

In the morning Hermione rushed to the Great Hall, anxious to see Draco; but when she got there she didn’t see him anywhere. Picking up her pace she walked over to Harry and Ron, scanning the Slytherin table as she did so.

“Is something wrong Hermione?” Harry asked. Her brows furrowed and her lips pursed as she continued to search for him. “Hermione?” Then she snapped out of her trance and looked at Harry finally, also at Ron who had stopped stuffing his face for a moment to look at her and listen in on the conversation.

“Uh, no, nothing is wrong. I’m fine.” Next Hermione took her seat next to Harry and grabbed a few things and set them on her plate, but didn’t touch them once. “Does the Slytherin table seem a bit quiet and empty to you, or is it just me?” Ron looked over her shoulder.

“Yeah. Where’s Malfoy?” Then they all started scanning the crowd.

“Probably up to no good,” Harry said finally. Ron agreed, nodding his head and then continuing to eat. As for Hermione, she pushed her plate aside and stood up, heading back to the Gryffindor Common Room. She wouldn’t be able to eat or sleep for days if she didn’t know where Draco was.

When Hermione got to the common room, she found a piece of parchment and a quill and began to write.

I didn’t see you today. I hope you are alright.

                                                                                    -H

Flicking her wand she sent it, and then sat waiting for a reply, but it never came.
