It was finally time to embrace a new chapter of her story when the whispers of dawn quietly tiptoed into her room, bidding goodbye to all those restless nights of uncertainty and eagerness.

As Nicola braced herself to say hello to a new story all over again, she was more than ready to say goodbye to the one that was before. After all, Nicola was promised a love like the gentle caress of the wind, soothing and assuring in its own beautiful way. Little did she know it would end up becoming a tempest storm, sweeping her away in its fierce embrace.

For her, falling in love was like slipping into the depths of an unfamiliar darkness, an exciting rush of discovering a magical meadow where lived the happiness Nicola had always been on a quest to find. She couldn't see what she was descending into but the possibility was enough to keep her thrilled. If only she would have known what she was getting herself into...

A sudden ring from her landline pulled her out of the world in her head, snapping her right back to reality. A butterfly fluttering in her stomach, a shaky exhale when her feet hit the cold floor as she wondered who would be calling her so early in the morning on her home phone.

Could it be-

Maybe this was a sign. Maybe he was finally back because he realised what he had lost. This was the happy ending Nicola had yearned for so long and she was ready to have him back, in spite of all the messy middles. She knew her story couldn't end like this and here he was, stopping Nicola right when she was about to take her first step towards forgetting him.

"Hello?" She picked up the receiver and spoke into it, not bothering to hide the tinge of desperation in her voice.

Her heart shattered into pieces when the pain of realization shot through, and she begged for the tears to finally fall and empty her already burdened heart. It wasn't him. Her own body betraying her, she fell flat on the cold floor, numbly waiting for the pain to end.
