Josh's P.O.V

"Must be another new boyfriend...the girl just can't seem to keep a man, huh?" My girlfriend, Debby, says about one of my good friends.

I hear Delilah and some guy laughing from across the room. Debby starts laughing at her own statement moments after.

What's so funny about all of this? I saw what Debby has been texting to Jenna all night. Delilah's life is none of her business. It's none of mine, either.

I can feel my face scrunch up at her words. I just don't get why she has to talk like that.

"Come on, let's go. It's late."

"Oh...okay."

The two of us grab our things and head to the door. I look over at Delilah and the mystery guy, who seem to be having a good time. We make eye contact, but I quickly look away.

We haven't talked a lot since I started dating Debby last year. Now I can see why.

I open the car door for my girlfriend, and jog over to the driver's side.

I turn the engine on and pull out of the parking lot.

My mind starts racing. I really don't know what's up with me tonight. I had ONE drink, but I just feel pissed off. With no reason.

"Debby." I say, but she doesn't respond. Just texts away on her phone.

"Debby, you know I love you right?" She looks up, at me.

"Yes?"

"I th-"

"I think we should break up." She cuts me off, taking the words right out of my mouth.

"You too?"

"At least for a while..."

I let out the breath I've been holding for the past minute or two. That was easier than I thought.

"Just drop me off at my parent's place then, okay? I'll grab my stuff from yours in the morning."

"Okay."

Delilah's P.O.V

I step out into the cold February breeze and shiver. Luckily, I brought a jacket. I unwrap it from my waist and zip it up as far as it can go.

"How far are you from here?" Dean says. I forgot he was walking with me.

"Only a few blocks. You don't have to walk with me if you don't want to. This isn't a bad part of town."

"No, I want to."

I shrug and we start in the direction of my house.

We walk in silent for a couple minutes. My phone buzzes, breaking the silence.

Josh: Can we talk?

I decide to ignore his message, and enjoy my nice walk home with my nice new friend. There isn't much to talk about, anyway.

"Do you have any pets?"

I look away from my phone and up at Dean. The golden question.

"Two cats. My children, Artemis and Venus." I show him my lock screen picture.

"That was fast."

"I love them. Do you have any?"

"One cat. A gecko, too." He shows me a couple pictures on his phone. "Boku and Mo. Mo's the gecko."

"Oh my god? I want a gecko so bad now?"

We turn the corner, and I see someone sitting on the steps in front of my apartment. I can see the hair from here.

"Isn't that the guy from the bar?"

"Yep. And this is my apartment." I turn to face Dean. "Thank you for walking me home, you really didn't have to do that."

"Anytime. Really."

I dig in my small bag for the pen that I vaguely remember packing. "Mind if I give you my number?"

He shakes his head and sticks his arm out, to my confusion.

"I don't walk around with paper, and I doubt you have any in your little clutch." He laughs.

I scribble my number on his hand and he does the same to me.

"You can call or text me for anything. Seriously." I look down at my feet. Why do I trust this guy I just met?

"Thank you. Good night."

"Good morning." He waves and heads in the opposite direction.

I take a deep breath and turn back around towards my apartment. I try to walk up unnoticed, but Josh looks up right when I reach the steps.

"Hey...did you get my text?"

"Yeah, I did. Sorry, I didn't know how to reply."

"S'okay. Sorry I just kinda waited for you. I'm just having a bad night."

I sit down next to him on the steps. We haven't talked in a while. Between just the two of us, anyway. Speaking of which, where's Debby?

"What's wrong?"

Josh rubs his shoes on the pavement and twiddles his thumbs.

"Josh?"

"Um..."

I take his hand and turn his face towards mine. He looks really stressed out.

"It's me. You can tell me anything."

He sighs and takes his hand back, resting his face in it.

"We broke up."
