Evangelion: New System (Part 5)

NERV FILE 5

  May 26- Hey there. Sorry to leave you hanging but I needed to sleep. When I left you, I had passed out from having my EVA's legs crushed. When I came too, I was in my own bed. To my surprise, I was perfectly fine.   

Rei: Hey...

  She had been sitting near my bed. I hadn't noticed her.  

Me: Hey... Oof... how long have I been out?

Rei: It's been about a day.

Me: Well shit... is everybody else okay? Did I kill the angel?

Rei: Yes to both. You're a hero today.  

She smiles when she says this and looks away.  

Me: Has a nice ring to it... "Kane Shinari, savior of mankind."

Rei: Mhmm! Im glad you're awake... but I need to go. Are you okay? Need anything?

Me: Naaah.   

I stand up from the bed, unsteadily at first, but I find my balance quickly.  

Me: See?

Rei: Good. See you later I guess.

Me: Where ya headed?

Rei: ... to see Shinji and Asuka.  

Shinji... that little shit...  

Me: I'll go with you, if you don't mind. I'd like to see them too.

Rei: No. You should rest.

Me: I can rest when I get there.  

She finally concedes, and after convincing my brain that my legs were indeed intact, we set off. She seems less at ease around me as she had a couple days ago. We enter their apartment.  

Me: I'm alive!

Misato: Of course. You were only sleeping.

Me: Ask me if I give a fuck. C'mon. Ask.  

Asuka comes out of nowhere and literally knocks me down with a hug.  

Asuka: You're okay!

Me: Apparently so...  

We stand up, and I'm pretty sure she also noticed them giving us a kind of "when the fuck did this happen?" look.  

Me: I need to have a word with Shinji. Anybody know where he is?

Asuka: He's... he was here a second ago...

Misato: He's in his room I think.

Me: We need to have a talk, just us. I'll be back in a minute.  

I walk back to Shinji's room and open the door. He's sitting in a chair, his head in his lap and a cassette player in his hand.  

Me: Shinji.   He jumps up.  

Shinji: Hi Kane.

Me: Shinji... where were you?

Shinji: What do you...  

He doesn't finish his sentence due to me shoving him into a wall.  

Me: You know damn well. We had an angel attack, and only 3 EVAs. Where was Unit 001? Where the FUCK were you, kid? I almost got flattened out there! What was so godawfully important that you couldn't be there?

Shinji: I don't want to pilot the EVA anymore.  

This sent me over the edge. I picked him up with both hands by his shirt and smashed him into the wall again.
