Harry

"Harry!" Hermione cried, "what's going on?"

"Death Eaters," Harry responded calmly, "we have to get everyone out. Get all the children out." He drew his wand and began to cast protective enchantments as Hermione ran to Hugo and Rose and embraced them, before sending them wit Mr and Mrs Weasley so they could side-along apparate to the Burrow.
Harry turned and saw that Ginny was still there, "Ginny, what are you doing? Go!"

Ginny turned to him, her face set with determination, "when are you going to realise I'm old enough to fend for myself?" She demanded.

"Only if I ever decide to stop protecting you!" Harry replied urgently, "now, go, please."

"No!" Ginny said angrily, "I won't! I'm staying here to help you!"

Harry turned imploringly to Hermione, who shook her head. He turned away bitterly, "OK, you can help. But stay close to me."

"Always." Ginny whispered.

"These protective enchantments won't hold them long," Hermione remarked, "how many are out there?"

Harry peered around the side of the curtain, "there has to be about twenty." He said, counting the vast amount of havoc wreaking figures.

"I sent a patronus to the ministry," Ron said, "they're on their way."

"Brilliant, Ron," Hermione said warmly.

Ron responded, "always the tone of surprise."

Sparks seemed to fall from midair, the sky looked like it was cracking and falling away as the protective fields broke. Harry gripped Ginny's wrist and Ron took Hermione's hand. Harry pushed Ginny out of harm's way, behind the piano (where she collided with Hermione, who Ron had pushed) as the door burst open. Harry raised his wand and Ron copied him, they directed them at the men and the battle begun.
Curses flew everywhere, bouncing off objects, shattering ornaments. In the middle of the fight, Draco Malfoy materialised, swiftly joining in the fray. The three men battled valiantly, but where outnumbered, Harry felt beads of sweat trickle down his face, where they mingled with the blood gushing from his nose. He saw fiery red flying about and was nearly killed as he stopped to look as Ginny battled a large man. Luckily, he managed to doge the spell, a smile froze on his face as he felt a searing pain and everything went black.

Ginny

The house was in ruins, bodies lay everywhere. Ginny had been evacuated after the ministry had arrived, but was now allowed back. One body caught her eye; a pale man with dark hair and broken glasses-

"Harry!" Ginny screamed, falling to her knees beside him. "NO!" She took his ice cold hand and held it in hers, desperately searching for a pulse. A pulse that she could not find. "Help!" She yelled at the top of her voice, "my husband's dying!"
Footsteps clattered down the stairs and Jeffrey and a young girl appeared. Ginny had never seen this girl before, she had blonde hair and blue eyes, she looked in horror as her eyes fell on Harry.

"Jessica," Jeffrey said in a low voice, "summon a healer."

Jessica (A/N this character is for Jessica 200212) nodded and waved her wand, something silver streaked from it and vanished.
A team of healers arrived instantaneously. The conjured a stretcher and put Harry onto it, disapparating and leaving Ginny alone. She battled the tears as she looked around for Hermione and Ron, who had just arrived. Looking bloody and tattered, but otherwise unharmed. Hermione embraced Ginny immediately and Ginny let a few tears escape her eyes and drip onto her friend's shoulder.

"Ginny, it'll be OK," said Ron in a hollow voice, as though he did not believe it himself.

Hermione just held her tighter and said nothing, as she let Ginny cry into her shoulder. At some point, Ginny felt Hermione's body shaking as she began to sob as well. This did nothing to help Ginny, who began to weep harder as Hermione did so. She bit her lip, trying her very best to stop crying, she did not want to be weak, she had to be strong for Harry. She knew that Lily, James and Albus were safe at the Burrow and that she would have to tell them. She didn't want to tell them, but she would not have liked it if she had been kept in the dark when her father had been attacked.

"Hermione," Ginny said, her voice muffled by Hermione's shoulder. "I need to tell them."

Hermione released her and looked at Ginny in concern, "will you be OK to?"

Ginny nodded and wiped her eyes on her sleeve, "I have to."

She arrived at the Burrow and was instantly pulled into a hug from her mother. She breathed in the familiar mother-y scent of lavender and baking, Ginny relaxed almost at once. Her mum held her at arm's length, "are you all right, sweetheart?" She asked in concern.

"I need to tell you something," Ginny replied quietly.

Ginny took a seat in the comfortable living room, the family all crowded around. Aware of all the eyes on her, Ginny swallowed hard and began. "Harry, ahm, he was hurt by one of the Death Eaters. He d-died for ten minutes but they managed to restart his heart. He's in a coma now but they don't know if he'll- if he'll..."

"Wake up," George supplied gravely.

Lily was the first to crack, tears poured down her sweet face and she threw herself into Ginny's arms. A few tears fell down Albus' face as he pried her away, perhaps seeing that Ginny was trying very hard not to cry herself. James, however, sat stony faced with a fierce look in his eye, perhaps trying to look brave, perhaps simply angry. Mrs Weasley began to cry as she held Lily in her arms, Albus sat by James and neither said anything.

"I'm sorry, Gin," Bill said, holding her in his arms, "it's awful."

Ginny could not find herself capable of saying anything, so she just sat and buried her face in Bill's shoulder.
Bill simply held her and she felt someone small wrap their arms around her. She turned to see Lily, Ginny opened her arms for Albus and James, who joined the hug. She had no idea how long they sat like that, but they did. For what seemed like an age, that could have only been a few minutes.

The next day, Ginny went to visit Harry. He was fast asleep in his bed, attached to life support. Ginny lay the flowers down next to him, sat down and took his hand. She traced patterns on it with her thumb and watched his relaxed face.

"Hey, Harry," Ginny whispered, "how are you? I'm sorry, I didn't know that you would get hurt, I thought I was helping. But every time I help I mess it up. I wish you could hear me right now, I'm saying everything I could never say to your face. I am so, so sorry. I really am. It's all my fault, I didn't want this to happen. I love you." Tears now flowed down her face and her heart was twisting in despair. "I'm sorry, just please wake up. You've done this before. Just, don't...be...dead..." Her voice cracked, Ginny pressed her lips against his icy ones then left. Wiping away tears.
In the waiting room, she ran into Malfoy, who was chatting to the girl -Jessica, Ginny thought she was called- who had summoned the healers.

"So, Friday night?" Malfoy was saying, "I'll take you out for dinner?"

Jessica smiled, "yeah, see you then." And she twisted on the spot and vanished.

Malfoy turned as Ginny approached, "hey, you OK?" He asked, presumably catching a glimpse of her face.

Ginny nodded, "yeah."

Draco looked at her pityingly and pulled her into a hug, "it'll be all right," he whispered as her restraint broke and she began to cry. "He's Harry Potter, all he does is cheat death."

Ginny stood hoping, more than anything, that Draco was right.
