— mark's p.o.v "in breaking news, a teen boy's body was found in the woods of han national park. police do not yet know the identity of the young male but ask the community to help with the case as it progresses. saria is now here with the weather."
"well the weather is a bit cold with a chance of sno..."
i let the noise of my television drown out as i dropped my bowl or finished cereal into the sink. all week had been nothing but bad news, bodies being found everyday, anywhere you could think of. back of a company building, in the woods, floating in the river, washing up on beaches. it was a corpse extravaganza. a pattern had seemed to develop with the murders which suspected a group or possibly one person committing the crimes. every victim was a teen boy. there was no specific look to them, they just had to be a young male living close or around han national park.
i had been keeping up with the cases ever since the first broke out, it being a shock to everyone living in our small prefecture of yeoldo. it sparked the inner detective in me to research the police reports. several of the cases being very close but not too close to where i knew the victims. to which i was grateful for, i never knew what i'd do if it was.
"mark! stop watching the news and walk sunny down the street so she can use the bathroom, she's been scratching by the door for over 5 minutes." my mom came strutting down the stairs, haphazardly trying to fit her wavy hair into a rubber band.
i giggled at the sight hiding my face by using my large hand. "you know you have to use an actual scrunchy right? your hair is too big for that thing." i lectured and my mother rolled her eyes before shoving past me and bursting into my sister's door. which followed with a whole bunch of objections about privacy.
i took one last look at the television screen watching as the weather lady, saria, pointed to multiple locations of yeoldo, to which each space was covered by an icon displaying a cloud with white spots discarding from the bottom. hopefully they'd start announcing which schools would close soon.
"come on sunny, let's go." the said dog leaned her head to the right looking up at me, the leash sitting loosely in my hands. she yawned before sluggishly tapping her paws against the floor and sitting so i could connect her collar with the lead.
my phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket, making the outside of my thigh tickle. i jumped being frightened by the sudden sound breaking the white noise of the tv and the snow pelting against the living room windows in the background.
i read the message displayed on my screen before scrunching my eyebrows.
my lil cucumber 🥒❤️ have you seen bam? he's not at his house?
me last i seen him was last night at around 8 when we visited him at the movie theatre, his shift ended around 10 tho
my lil cucumber 🥒❤️ ohhh, well his mom said she was sleep by 9 and that she just woke up so maybe he went to school early or smth, guess i'm walking to school by myself smh
me i would wait by bum's house for you but i'll be late and i'm walking sunny but i don't think we have school tho
my lil cucumber 🥒❤️ i haven't heard anything about our school district i'll double check
me alright
i locked my phone absentmindedly sitting it in my back pocket again before heading outside to allow sunny to relieve herself. it was freezing and the atmosphere had only touched my fingertips so far. it was a biting pain, almost like the cold had teeth and the more we stepped into it's being, it defended itself telling us to leave.
"okay sunny, it's cold so find a spot and pop a squat." i mumbled to the small animal of course being ignored because we couldn't communicate on the same level. if only we did, then maybe i could teach her how to use a toilet in the house like those cool cats do on the internet. but i was lazy and this wasn't even my pet to begin with, my sister had gotten sunny as a birthday present last year and ever since, the responsibilities have been put upon my shoulders.
i wasn't sure if sunny appreciated all the things i did and sacrificed for her, such as my precious news time and my time cuddling in my knit blankets my grandmother made for me every year. but i guess she did to an extent, she still loved my sister more than she did me.
i glanced around the area, my house a couple feet behind me, the quiet café across the street, and the colorful candy store across from that. it was pretty silent on the streets, not many cars passing by or people walking by. i enjoyed the environment around me, i could swim in the calmness of the air even if my fingertips felt like they were breaking off.
the sky was a pale blue, it could be mistaken for a light grey, the air was yet cold but possessed a fragrance that seemed fit for warm air, almost like an aromatic wood.
for a minute i seen someone close behind, a somewhat small black figure but when i turned around it was gone in a flash. maybe the cold had really began to get me, i thought as i looked around the street not spying one moving soul except the one below me being sunny. her white fur melted into the snow making her look as if she was a ball of the white substance.
"come on snowball, it's cold." my voice followed by a little shake of her ponytail that sat on top of her head sliced through the tranquil air. i hurried inside as the sky began releasing small balls of slush.
note: as i write this i am watching a cat eat out of my dumpster. how's your day?
