Working for the Ministry of Magic as an Auror had been one of Harry Potter's dreams since he first heard about the profession. He has loved fending off dark magic and helping the Wizarding World; He was good at his job.

It was the parties he hated.

For every holiday, the Kingsly, the new Minister of Magic, he always threw a party. And of course, Harry, along with all of the other employees felt obligated to go.

He always came to the parties alone, and he always left the parties alone. They were uneventful. He would make small talk about family, about work, but really, he was just waiting for a chance to get back home and crawl into bed for another day of work to come sooner.

"Kingsly went all out this year, huh?"

Harry nearly jumped at the voice coming from behind him, grinning at the man patting the empty spot on the bench next to him, "He sure did, Draco," Harry threw back the rest of his drink, "But at least there's free drinks." Draco grinned at him causing Harry to laugh, "We've been friends since the war, nearly ten years and I still can't get over your goofy little grin."

"Well," Draco scoffed playfully, "I may be a Malfoy, but it doesn't mean I'm completely heartless."

"Could have had me fooled."

Draco shook his head, staring at the distant look on Harry's face, the desire to be anywhere but there. After the war, he and Harry had developed a fairly solid friendship, and over time he learned more and more about him, from his past to how to distract him from boredom. But he never really understood why he hated festivities.

He turned his attention to the swarm of wizards and witches that mingled together, dancing, talking, and playing drinking games. His eyes locked on Harry's friends with their new partners, realizing he now had conversation material

"I bet if someone told you nine and half years ago that your best friends would end up with mine, you would have called them crazy," Draco shook his head, trying to hide his triumphant smirk at Harry's peaked interest.

"I always thought that Ron and Hermione would end up together," Harry said, tearing his eyes from the floor and brining them to the dancing couples, "When the broke up I was shocked, but not nearly as shocked when I found out the Ron had gotten Pansy Parkinson of all people pregnant," He brought his eyes to Hermione and her dark-skinned mate, "Blaise and 'Mione didn't surprise me really. They're both extremely smart, very goal-oriented. They're a good match."

Draco nodded, "What about you Harry?" He asked, the former Gryffindor turning to face him.

"What do you mean?"

"It's almost 2008," Draco said softly, "How did you expect things to turn out?"

Harry sighed, "I don't know, to be honest. I had always expected to become an Auror, settle down..."

"But...?"

"I never expected to be doing it alone," Harry gave a bitter grin, "I wanted someone to be with me, not as the boy-who-lived but as Harry. Just Harry," He looked deep into Draco's eyes, "I can honestly say, Draco, even from the beginning you were the only one who saw me that way. You still see me that way. As just Harry."

Draco chuckled lightly, "Yeah," He spoke softly, "I have. And that's how I always will see you. I get it. I hated when people looked at me as just a Malfoy, just as the son of Lucius, You-Know-Who's most loyal subject. You were the only one who saw me as more than just a Malfoy. You hated me, because my father had turned me into this horrible person, and I didn't realize how awful I was until my sixth year," He smiled at Harry. Yes, smiled, "I thought I hated it, you, when you treated me different. But I don't think I ever really did."

"I know what you mean," Harry said, "You're the only one who's ever really understood... Ron flipped when he found out who I was, and Hermione, she had read all about me before she started... but you... you offered friendship, then you acted probably as anyone would after rejection..."

"Oh, if my eleven-year-old self knew I'd be having a heart to heart with Harry Potter, I would have lost my mind," He grinned, looking down at his hands, mumbling something.

"What was that?" Harry asked, trying to get him to speak up.

"I -um," Draco looked back up, debating if he should say anything, "Nothing."

Harry was about to pressure him into repeating himself, but had his attention drawn to the chanting around them.

"10....." He smiled at Draco, pulling him up to stand, "9....." He stared at the wall clock along with all the other people in the room.

"8....." Draco's heart was racing, his emotions fluttering confusingly through his body, "7....." He bit his lip, everything feeling slow motion as his mind raced, "6..... 5....." He glanced up at the clock, the second hand nearing the twelve, "4..... 3....." He decided, then and there, "2....." He grabbed Harry's hand the boy turning to face him with a smile. "1...." This was it.

"Happy new year!" He leaned in pressing his lips to Harry's, knowing there was no turning back now. Harry seemed shocked, for the first millisecond before he brought his free hand up to Draco's neck, putting more pressure on the kiss. He wanted it to be more, but he kept it tender, chaste before pulling back.

"What was that for?" Harry asked, smiling at him with his head tilted.

Draco shrugged with a delighted smirk, "Just wanted to," He said, repeating what he mumbled, "I've always wondered what it would be like to kiss you."

Harry bit his lip, letting the butterflies take over his stomach, "And?"

"And..." Draco spoke joyfully, "It was the perfect way to start a new year."

Harry looked into his eyes hopefully, "Just the new year?"

Draco beamed, shaking his head, "No," He said softly, "The start of a new... everything."

"Happy New Year, Draco," Harry whispered, pressing their foreheads together.

"Yeah," Draco replied, "Happy New Year."
