Geez he's gorgeous

There are honestly too many amazing pics of him for just one to do it justice

Let's start with a character that been on my mind a lot lately due to the upcoming release of the newest Maze Runner film. TMR is a solid series. It has great writing, a strong setting, and a refreshingly unpredictable plot, as well as plenty of aversions to obnoxious YA cliches like romance, political undertones, and being surrounded by advanced technology. But for me, Newt made this series stand out from the sea of YA dystopias and took it from good to fantastic.

Newt is one of those characters who steals your heart from the moment he limps onto the page. He's the first friendly face protagonist Thomas (and the reader) meets in The Glade, greeting him with words of encouragement and copious amounts of British slang (which only makes him more endearing.) After a heart-to-heart by the campfire, Thomas and Newt develop a bond that will last throughout the series, and they are verh loyal and supportive of each other.

He's also responsible for plenty of the series's most memorable one-liners, such as the immortal "Great, we're all bloody inspired." He's extremely witty and has a great sense of humor.

After the previous leader, Alby, is killed, Newt establishes himself as a natural leader, assessing situations with calmness and intelligence. While Thomas is the one who initially tries to get everyone out of the glade, he clearly couldn't have done it without him.

But while it may look like he has it all together (his nickname is The Glue, after all) Newt's actually falling apart. Overwhelmed by guilt over friends who've died, a despairing Newt threw himself off a wall of the maze in an attempt to kill himself. He survived, but ended up with his famous limp. And this is my favorite (and also the most tragic) thing about him; despite the pain he's in, he puts on a smile for the sake of those he loves. And even when he finds out he's not immune to the mind-eating disease The Flare, he puts on a brave face. The poor kid slowly grows more and more aggressive, slipping further into madness, until he finally begs Thomas to kill him.

He's also played by one of my favorite actors, Thomas Brodie-Sangster. His performance is subtle and highly realistic, demonstrating mastery of every hand gesture and verbal inflection. And, as you can see from the Death Cure trailer, plenty of emotion, as it looks like he'll do a brilliant job playing a flare-infected Newt. Combine that with great chemistry with Dylan O'Brien and some beautiful brown eyes and you have a seriously underrated turn.

Newt is one of the most realistic yet loveable characters I've recently read about. He's kind, smart, funny, sensitive, but strong, and selfless. James Dashner should be proud for writing such a well written character.

If you read this, THANK YOU, and I'll post again soon!
