Hey, how ya doin well I'm doin just fine I lied I'm dYiNg iNsiDE
My opinions on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are conflicting. On one hand, it's an emotionally powerful and visually stunning piece of art with a (mostly) amazing cast that features a lot of what we loved about the original series. On the other hand...some of the characters we know and love were significantly derailed, and, while I didn't mind the plot as much as some did, some of it did feel a little derivative. However, there is one element of this play that makes any of its flaws disappear (like magic!). And that, my friends, is the truly fantastic character of Scorpius Malfoy, the only new character in this play that lives up to the standard set by the original series.
Scorpius's personality is terrifically nuanced and an absolute delight to behold. He is kind and unflinchingly loyal, but also blunt, honest, and quite the deadpan snarker when he wants to be. He's often scared, and refreshingly unafraid to admit it, but is by no means a coward, and when it gets down to it is capable of incredible bravery. And boy, is he a NERD. Scorpius's love for knowledge and magic show through in everything he does, and he's basically the literal definition of adorkable. He's pretty much everything I could ever want in a best friend.
Scorpius is also a tragic and painfully relatable character. You guys will know from how much I love Newt and other characters like him that any character who buries their pain and personal demons under jokes and undying devotion to the protagonist is automatically going to be one of my favorites. A lot of Scorpius's humor has serious "hahaha please help me" undertones to it, which makes him SO realistic, especially during this time when many people I know have similar coping mechanisms, myself included. I relate so much to Scorpius's deep-seated desire for connection and belonging, and I think lots of people can in their own ways. This makes it all the more heartbreaking when he blows up at Albus for seemingly abandoning him like everyone else has.
What's REALLY fantastic is that unlike characters like Albus and Harry, Scorpius doesn't try to hide his emotional needs under a mountain of brooding. While he puts on his fair share of brave faces, he's still a refreshingly open role model for young boys, proving that it's perfectly okay and often necessary and health to let out your feelings.
Since so much of what I love about him you wouldn't catch without seeing the show live, I can't talk about Scorpius without talking about how much I adore Anthony Boyle's performance. He just has such a wonderfully endearing energy about him, and everything he does is brimming with enthusiasm (and a beautifully conveyed undercurrent of emotional pain). The sheer conviction and feeling with which he delivers his lines is sure to make you want to give him a hug. He also brings a great deal of beautifully awkward humor to his performance, whether he's bluntly telling Albus what's what or delivering bad jokes with palpable gusto. ("Its time that time turning became....A THING OF THE PAST!") And that voice! It takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, it's wonderfully expressive and lends itself to Scorpius's lines incredibly well.
Lastly, I'd like to talk about Scorpius's wonderful relationship with Albus. The chemistry between Boyle and Sam Clemmett is just wonderful, and I think it's a beautiful thing that they were able to overcome years of family rivalry. However, there's such a sense of yearning and need to their scenes together that it really feels more like a romance than a friendship- and I really wish it had been portrayed that way.
Scorpius Malfoy is a brilliantly written and acted character that you're sure to fall in love with, regardless of your opinion on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. He's loveable, relatable, and a friend who will be there for you no matter what, just like Ron and Hermione were.
