chapter thirteen

Amanda

Somehow it was already halloween and Alesha and I were going to take our children out trick-or-treating together. Almost everyone in the neighbourhood was going to go trick-or-treating if they were children. Alesha and I had both dressed up as black cats to take our children out. Lexi had wanted to be a princess this year for halloween and Azura had wanted to be a fairy from Disney so we dressed Theo up as a prince and decorated his stroller to look like a horse. I placed Theo into his stroller and he attempted to grab at the cat ears on the top of my head. I laughed and pushed them back up into their correct place. I buckled Theo up and I called for Lexi to come out of her room. Lexi was dressed as Rapunzel this year and her hair was braided but she needed help with zipping the costume up. I zipped the back of the costume up for her and we left my apartment. I put the bowl of candy out for the children that were trick-or-treating onto the small stand that I had pulled out of my living room while Lexi was getting dressed into her costume. I locked the apartment door and Lexi ran down the hall and down the stairs to the door of our apartment building.

“Come on, Mummy! All the good candy’s gonna be gone soon!” Lexi urged. I smiled and I opened the door to the apartment building for her once I maneuvered Theo’s stroller down the small set of stairs. Azura and Alesha were going to meet us at the sidewalk that lead up to our apartment building and I could already see them walking up the path.

Alesha waved when she saw me and I waved back. We kissed on the cheek when Lexi, Theo, and I walked up to them. Alesha had already seen Lexi’s halloween costume as she had gone to school for her classroom halloween party in her costume. Alesha cooed over how adorable Theo was in his first halloween costume and he smiled at her because of the attention he was getting. Theo always smiled whenever someone was giving him attention and I could have sworn that Simon had rubbed off on him too much from him babysitting Theo.

“Can we go now?” Azura asked, tugging on Alesha’s sleeve.

“Yes, we can,” Alesha replied. We started to walk and the girls walked ahead of us so Alesha could be with me. I pushed Theo along to the first apartment building after mine and the girls went into it. I walked on the wheelchair ramp to get Theo into the building and Alesha went up the stairs.

The girls went to the first apartment door and they knocked, saying “trick-or-treat!” The door opened and the man came out with a bowl of candy for them. He let them pick out a piece each and he smiled when he saw Theo’s costume. He gave Theo a mini chocolate bar that would be able to melt in his mouth and I put it into the basket underneath the seat of the stroller. The girls said thank you to the man and they went to the next door.

“Amanda, I missed my period this month and last month. I think that I could be pregnant,” Alesha whispered to me as we came up to the last apartment building.

“Have you taken a pregnancy test yet, ‘Lesha?” I asked in reply. She shook her head no and she wrung her hands together. The girls knocked on the apartment’s door and received their candy from the woman inside.

“I haven’t. Should I do one tonight?” She responded. I nodded my head as the girls cae running back to us. They were beginning to fade as it was the last building that we were going to other than the apartment building that I lived in. We were only go to go trick-or-treating on the floor I lived on. The girls walked to my building as they knew they were tired.

“Do it tonight. Run to the corner store and buy one. I’ll be with you when you do it, Alesha,” I promised.  She told Azura that she was going to go to the corner store to get something she needed to spend the night at my apartment as she claimed she forgot it. Alesha left the girls with me and we headed up to the floor that Lexi, Theo, and I lived on. They knocked on the first door of the floor and the man answered. I slightly knew the guy who lived in the apartment as he had been the first person to greet me when I moved into my apartment after I had gotten pregnant with Lexi. That had been over five years ago when I was pregnant and I should have moved into a larger apartment than the two bedroom one that I lived in. Lexi and Theo had to share a bedroom and that wasn’t always good as Theo was still sometimes waking up in the middle of the night so he stayed in my bedroom.

I waved to the man and he smiled back. The girls said thank you to him and went to knock at the next apartment door. The girls received their candy from each apartment and we got up to my apartment at the end of the hallway. I unlocked the door for the girls to go in and they ran into the living room with their bag of candy. Alesha was just coming back with the pregnancy test that she was going to do in a small bag from the corner store that was near where I lived.

“Are you ready to do the test, Alesha?” I asked her, picking up the empty bowl that had been used for candy and bringing it into the apartment. Alesha nodded in response and she went in my apartment, laughing when she saw our daughters exchanging candy already.
