JD shivered. He lit a cigarette with fumbling fingers, nearly dropping his match. He was numb. It was mainly from the cold. JD didn't feel like that was much of an excuse. He had warm socks, dry feet, and spent his days inside.

He'd lost a new round of patients that night. Three more men were dead, one of which he'd pegged to pull through. JD shivered.

He finished his cigarette. The smoke hadn't done much to warm his insides, but his nerves had steadied.

He took a final breath of fresh air, before heading back into the med ward.
