"How was school?" my mom asked when I walked through the door.

I closed the door behind me and didn't answer. How was I supposed to tell her I no longer had any friends? My mom poked her head out of the kitchen.

"Is something wrong?"  she asked.

Sighing, I tossed my backpack in the living room. My mom leaned against the doorway, waiting for me to respond. I went into the kitchen and sat at the dining table. Almost as if on cue, my mom sat down and placed a plate of brownies in front of me.

I swallowed tickly and forced myself to take a deep breath. "Sonia and I got into a fight," I blurted out. "We're not talking anymore."

Mom grabbed a brownie and took a bite.

I looked down at the table. "The Prince told me Sonia is a fake friend. It's better to have no friends than fake friends."

Mom took another bite of her brownie. "Do you think he's right?" she asked.

"It's not that," I said. "I know she's my friend, it's just -" I sighed. "- I don't know why she's being like this. I don't know what changed."

"Have you talked to her?"

I shook my head. "I don't know if I should. I don't if she will even talk to me. She blamed me because Carlos left home and didn't contact his parents."

My mom shifted forward. "What?"

"Yeah," I told her. "I haven't talked to her about it."

"Since when are you so close to the Prince?"

I gave her a look. "Are you really asking me that?"

"It's relevant," she told me. "You obviously care about what the Prince said. It sounds to me like you took his words seriously."

I grabbed a brownie and took a bite. Why did that makes sense? It shouldn't make sense. In silence, we ate some more brownies. Mom had never been one to comfort me. Not in a sense. It wasn't like I needed her to comfort me. I guess I just needed someone to - I sighed. What happened to a clean slate?

"I'll talk to her," I said. "I'll talk to Sonia. Maybe we can figure it out."

"That's good to hear," she said.

I gave her a look. Why did she always guess what was on my mind?

"I'm not close to the Prince," I told her.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah. He's annoying. He only thinks about himself."

"And yet, he put an end to the contract and Carlos is no longer on probation. Now, I'm sure the vampires are still going to keep an eye on him."

"What?"

"You didn't read the closing comments of the document?" she asked.

I didn't answer. So, the Prince had actually done something like that? Who would have thought that?

"Let's not get any ideas," I said. "He's still the Prince. He's not nice."

"Say what you will. Now go on up. Get some work done before dinner."

"Okay."

After grabbing my bag, I headed upstairs. I would talk to Sonia and hopefully figure it out. If not then, that was that. We wouldn't be friends anymore. If that's how it had to be.

My room was dark when I entered. That was weird because I hadn't -

* * *

My head swarmed. It pulsed painfully. Even my stomach was rolling. I shuddered. Ugh, what -?

There were voices. They echoed around me. My head started to spin. I tried opening my eyes but I couldn't. Everything kept spinning. I heard myself groan.

"Are you waking up, human?"

The voice wasn't familiar. Human? Then, it belonged to a vampire? Why was there a vampire -? I finally managed to open my eyes.

Everything was dark. Why was everything so dark? Why was there a face hovering -?

I jolted but found myself unable to move. I couldn't see them but there were ropes or something. I was tied to a chair.

"Don't struggle," the voice said. "I'd hate to see you damaged."

"Who are you? What do you want?"

"We don't want anything from you," the voice replied. "We're waiting for someone more important."

I had a gut feeling I knew who they were waiting for.
