Aftershock

[Note: I wrote this poem 3 years back, inspired by the deadly Nepal earthquake of April 25, 2015. I saw this picture on social media of a little Nepalese girl sitting on the ground amidst the rubble, hugging her equally little brother. I was so moved that i wrote this after that. It's a bit childish though, considering I wrote it 3 years back]

She clings to her brother,
Only one to depend on,
Without father or mother
In a world of devastation.

She stares at the red bricks
Which used to be her home,
Now just debris,
With nothing left at all.

Who had thought the other day
Her parents would be no more,
24 hours later, everything
Would be down to zero?

The other night her father
Was telling her a story,
Did he know the day after
Would be written down in history?

So she clings on to her brother,
Who hugs her back,
With only hope left to calm them,
After the horrors of the quake.
