Letty's P.O.V

As Lexi left for the elevator the kids were getting fidgety, so I had them go into the apartment. I shut the door and locked it.

A leathery smell lingered in the room, but that could be from the new furniture here. I glanced around at the apartment, I couldn't help but notice the little touches that Tanner left here and there.

On the pale blue wall was an eight by ten picture of Tanner and me at the Marine Corps Ball in a dark wood frame. I was wearing a black off the shoulder knee length dress with black heels. There was also a few angel figurines that Tanner got me on a few of his deployments sitting on the mantle.

I went to the kitchen to see if Tanner bought any groceries while he was here purchasing the furniture. Small footsteps echoed in the hallway, but I didn't pay attention to it at first.

As I opened the cupboards, someone knocked on the door. My hands became clammy, and my heart raced inside my chest. I knew then that I was on the verge of having a anxiety attack.

Where are the kids?

What do I do to protect myself and my children?

I checked where the kids were because I didn't know who was on the other side of the door. It could be my estranged husband, planning to smooth talk me into coming back.

As the knocking continued, I signalled to all three of children to stay quiet until I could figure out who was there. My hands trembled as I gripped the door, could it be him? What was I going to do? My chain of pessimistic thoughts was broken by the unfamiliar voice of new neighbour. It calmed me down a bit but not entirely, to know that it was not Jace.

But then I heard a male at the door saying, "Hey Letty, it's Derek. Lexi told me to bring this box up to you. She told me to tell you that it was from a guy by the name of Tanner."

I was thankful that it was just Derek. At least it was not my husband, Jace. Jace was the kind of person that would go to any length to get what he wanted.

"Thank you. I think you may have met him while he was here. His name is Tanner Rodriguez. He was here last week getting everything ready for us," I replied as I opened the door.

"It's not a problem. I remember I ran into him one morning when he was heading out for his morning runs. He said that he was here to get the place ready for his friend," answered Derek.

"He is one of the good things that I left back in Arizona. Oh by the way you can just put the box on the couch," I told Derek as I walked back to the kitchen to finish making the grocery list.

Derek POV

As I walked into the apartment to put down the box for Letty, I couldn't help but notice that she was acting like she was very scared.

What happened to her for her to be so scared?

I placed the box down on the brown leather couch, and then I headed to the kitchen to see if she needed any help. As I rounded the corner to the kitchen, I noticed that she was having a hard time getting the things off the top shelf.

"Do you need any help there?" I asked walking over to her.

"Sure, if you can just take what is on the top shelf out and put the items on the counter for me please; that would be a big help," Letty replied with a weak smile.

"Sure thing. But I don't think that he bought a lot of groceries," I pointed out.

As I was pulling the items out of the cabinets, she was saying what they were.

Ramen noodles, Rice Krispies, Frosted Flakes, canned tomatoes, canned carrots, tuna, spam.

By the time we got done with writing out the items, Letty had a full grocery list.

"If that's all you need from me, I'll just stay here with you all until Lexi arrives," I said as I headed to the leather oversized recliner that sat in the corner of the living room.

"That's fine. If you want, when I get back from grocery shopping Lexi and you can have dinner with myself and the kids," she gestured.

"That would be great," I exclaimed while leaning back in the recliner.
