S2E20 What Is and What Should Never Be

At an abandoned warehouse Dean is attacked by a djin that him and Sam are hunting. When he awakens the next day he is in bed next to a beautiful girl, Carmen, in an unfamiliar apartment. He calls Sam who is studying in law and thinks Dean is drunk. Dean discovers he's in Lawrence, Kansas and drives to his childhood home to find that his mother is alive. The has changed to where a demon never attacked when he was younger and there was no fire. John however died the previous year of a stroke in his sleep.

The next day Dean relaxes and enjoys his suburban life by spending time with his mother and mowing the lawn. Sam and Jessica arrive at the house. They had just flown in from California to celebrate Mary's birthday. That night at dinner in a restaurant Sam and Jessica announce that they are engaged. During the celebrations Dean is distracted by a young woman he sees that he also saw a glimpse of on the street earlier that day.

At home Dean wants to go out and spend time with Carmen, who he has found out is his girlfriend, Sam, and Jessica. Sam confronts Dean over his behavior, him and Dean haven't been close and he doesn't understand Dean's friendly demeanor. At his apartment Dean starts enjoying his life with Carmen until later on he sees a news broadcast that leads him to discover that all the people he saved are now dead. The ghostly women appears to him again and Dean sees images of dead people in his closet. Dean visits John's grave and anguished over why it is his job to sacrifice everything in order to save people. He comes to an unspoken resolution and walks off.

Dean is caught by Sam as he breaks into Mary's apartment to steal a silver k I've. Dean pretends that he needs it to pay a gambling debt. Sam insists on going with Dean and they drive to Illinois, to the abandoned warehouse form before. They find the girl Dean has been seeing, tied up and being held captive by the djin. She appears to be hallucinating. Dean has a flash of images and he starts ti suspect that he is being held by the djin and everything he has experienced is an illusion. Dean decides that if he is in a dream and he kills himself he will wake up. Sam tries to keep him from doing so and so dies, Mary, Carmen, and Jessica wanting him to stay with them and be happy.

In the real world Dean wakes up as Sam is rescuing him. The djin attacks, but Dean is able to kill it. They find the girl Dean was seeing and rescue her. Back at the motel Dean is pained from the life he got a glimpse of. Sam tries to convince him that all the people they saved makes their sacrifice worth it.
