Prologue

I was small. Only a child when the orcs came to our home. I watched them kill my family, everyone that lived and breathed on our estate. The servants scattered and ran only to be plucked down with arrows or spears, while others tried to help us fight. It didn't matter.

The dog and sheep were even slaughtered.

When it became clear that there was no way to fight the monsters, everyone started to run or hide. We were in the house, barricading ourselves behind door after door. My father was scrambling out a window, reaching his hands back for me when the door shattered and two massive creatures came in.

I forgot to reach for his hands. I forgot to grab onto him. I could only stare. The first of the two swiped my mother down with the biggest hammer I'd ever seen while the other came towards me and I screamed. I screamed until my father climbed back through the window and grabbed me, screaming out my mother's name as he apologetically left her body behind, but even as a child I knew it was too late to save her.

As we escaped through the window, one nearly grabbed us but then we were in the grass outside our family home, running for the not so distant forest. My father jumped over dead sheep, tripped on a servant's child that I used to play with, then cried out and hit his knees. He nearly dropped me and I never quite realized what was happening until he let me go and I saw the blood on his leg and the orc that had speared him grinning over his shoulder some distance away.

He told me to keep running, keep fighting to live, stay alive, and pushed me towards the trees and I ran. I ran, not knowing how his words would haunt me for the rest of my life as I fought to stay alive in a world that hated and despised me.
