I'm here to tell you the story of how Newt saved me. Yes, this sounds like a cheesy story but just hear me out. It was a few years ago when we were still in the glade and it happened something like this...

"Hey, Y/n!" Newt called out to me.

I sighed, exasperated with him. "What do you want Newt?"

"Is that any way to greet your closest friend?" He teased.

"Newt," I said annoyed, "I need to work."

"You have absolutely no one in the medjack room right now," he commented amused. "What do you need to get done?"

"I need to get an inventory of the medical supplies we have. That way I can ask the creators to send us more things we need for you clumsy shanks."

"I guess you do have something to do," he conceded, "but I need a favor."

I groaned to myself. Newt's favors were legendary for being absolutely terrible.

"What do you want me to do?" I sighed.

He grinned at me. "I want you to give me luck when I help Alby whip Gally into shape tomorrow."

I gaped at him, incredulous. "And how exactly am I supposed to do that?"

"Kiss me of course," he said cheekily.

"Newt," I groaned, exasperated.

This had been an ongoing debate between us. Newt confessed he had feelings for me and yes, I did like him back, but I was positive he only liked me because I was the only girl in the maze. Not because of my personality or my physical appearance, but because I was the only one available. Besides, Newt wouldn't want something broken.

"Now hear me out," Newt began but I couldn't, not when I knew what I was going through. I didn't want to drag him down with me.

"Newt, we've been over this," I said turning away from him.

"No, please -"

"Newt," I whispered, "please, just drop it." I said as my heart teared just a little bit more than it did last time I rejected him.

"Okay," he responded simply and walked away with his head bowed.

I gripped the table for some time after he left trying to keep the tears at bay.

"Hey Y/n," Clint said walking in. "Did you- woah, are you okay?" He asked seeing my white knuckled grip.

"Yeah," I said roughly. I cleared my throat and said again, "yeah. What did you need?"

"I was just wondering if you got the inventory ready for the box," he looked at me closely, trying to gauge if I was about to cry.

Oh gosh I thought to myself. If I look that bad then I need to get out of here.

"No, I'll finish it early tomorrow."

Clint sighed. "It's alright, I can do it."

"You sure?" I questioned, inching towards the door.

"Yeah."

"Thank you," I said and ran out of the room.

I needed to get someplace private and fast. It was happening again. The feeling of utter hopelessness that usually came after I rejected Newt comes crawling into my mind and my heart, infecting my ability to think rationally. Unfortunately it's been happening more and more lately, even when I hadn't just broken my own heart. It happened in the mead hall when I was surrounded by my friends, in the medjack room when I was alone with my thoughts, but most of all, it comes right before I go to sleep.
